Today, U.S. striker Charlie Davies is just one of us, just trying to cope

Charlie Davies, facing 6-12 months of physical recovery

Charlie Davies, facing 6-12 months of physical recovery

Most of us will never know a thing about what it’s like to live the high life of a pro athlete.  We couldn’t even come close to knowing.

To be well-known and relatively wealthy. To essentially have a support staff to manage many of the mundane chores of life. To be toasted, heralded and frequently reminded to "Put your wallet away, your money’s no good here!" To live large like a rock star.

Oh, it’s not all strawberries and lollipops, I suppose. There’s some pressure and a burden of expectation attached to it all. And woe is the public figure who runs afoul of the law or the spiteful spouse. Step too far out of line and you run the risk of crucifixion in the court of public opinion.

Then again, athletes aren’t in a box on that stuff. They can always walk away from it all.

Bottom line, they live a fairly privileged existence. Their days and nights don’t often resemble ours, as we play out the lives of ticky tacky, in houses that all look just the same.

Unless you’re Charlie Davies right now.

Today, you’re just one of us.

Today, Charlie Davies is just a human being like any of us, doing what some of us sometimes must: negotiating an overwhelming cascade of fears, thoughts and emotions.

Today Davies lies in ICU with a mangled leg, terrible internal injuries, various other physical ailments and a career that may be in tatters.  And then there’s an impending emotional undertow that, God willing, few of us will ever deal with.

He was in car with someone who died. No matter what the circumstances – and I’m sure we’ll know more later – it must be a terrible burden.

So today, Charlie Davies is a man whose future is cloudy. What he’ll be doing for work in 12 or 24 months, he can only hope for and guess about right now.

In his case, there's an extra layer of tangled introspection ahead: I'm sure that he's happy to be alive, but his head is surely spinning with those difficult questions, something along the lines of "Why her and not me?"

Pro athletes live an entirely different existence, indeed – most of the time. There are times, clearly, when they aren’t so unlike the rest of us, men brought to our knees, at the mercy of our doubts, regrets and fears.

What a game.....That one was for Davies

Not only did we allready qualify for the World Cup last Saturday, but the tie tonight makes us the group winner. The World Cup Draw is November 27th so hopefully we can get be one of the seeded teams.

Looks like Costa Rica has some work to do in their two games against Uruguay.

South Africa here we come.

Is the seeding process same as in '06?

If so, we’ve got almost no chance. South Africa (as host), Brazil, Argentina, England, Spain, Italy, and Germany will all definitely be ahead of us in the pecking order, and the Netherlands probably will be (mostly because of our ugly FIFA rankings at the end of ‘07 and ’08 – #19 and #22, respectively). Even if the Netherlands aren’t, France and Portugal would be ahead of us if they make it through the playoffs.

We have a better chance of being drawn in South Africa’s group than we do of being seeded, and the results would be functionally equivalent – we dodge all the top teams.

I don't know how the process works....

…just hoping is all. As of September 2009 we are # 11.

1 Brazil
2 Spain
3 Netherlands
4 Germany
4 Italy
6 Russia
7 England
8 Argentina
9 Croatia
10 France
11 United States
12 Greece
13 Serbia
14 Australia
15 Switzerland
16 Denmark
17 Portugal
18 Czech Republic
19 Bulgaria
20 Côte d’Ivoire

Croatia failed to qualify. Russia and France both finished in second place in their group (UEFA) and are in the two-legged playoffs to see who the final 4 countries of Europe will be.

Not saying it is a guarantee, but it would be cool.

FIFA has not announced how they will select seeds

If it is the same as 2006 though, we do not have any chance of being seeded. To be seeded, we would have to jump Mexico in the seeding process(unlikely, but possible) and then Argentina, France and Portugal would have to fail to qualify. Because Argentina qualified, our already slim chances are gone if they use the same formula as 2006. FIFA could change their seeding formula though.

Well we are definatly ahead of Mexico

I don’t know why they would be ahead of us, however the other teams make it tough. Like I said, I am hoping because one time recently Mexico got one of the seeded spots.

I am glad we are in so I can relax til the groups are set.

The seeding system they used in 2006 is not just the FIFA rankings

They use a formula that combines the FIFA ranking and performances in the last two World Cups, with the 2006 World Cup more heavily weighted than 2002. In the seeding rankings, Mexico is ahead of us and it’s very, very difficult for us to pass them because they qualified for the last two knockout stages, while we didn’t make it in 2006. Even if we could though, we needed Argentina, France and Portugal to all miss the World Cup, which didn’t happen. Should they use the same seeding formula as 2006, we have no chance whatsoever is getting a seed. FIFA could change their seeding formula though.

I hope Onyewu is alright

Didn’t look good when he went down. At least we’re done with qualifying.

Should have been an easy win tonight, but at least we got a draw.

Hope Davies gets well soon.

Insanity is just a state of mind.

Sounds like 3-4 months for Onyewu

Not a good day for the team.

Our thoughts are definitely with Charlie Davis and everyone that was involved in that wreck

Hopefully he is able to make a complete recovery in his own time. Times like these put sports into their proper context.

Well yeah, that too. My wife isn’t fully converted to the dark side yet; so we’ve got tickets with the Eagles. ;)
