Pro Quality. Fan Perspective.
Around SBN: Ole Miss-Alabama: "Let's Go Eat.Wait. What Happened?"

George McFly: "You … are my density."

George McFly believed in destiny. And "density." I'm just not sure I do ... not as it relates to MLS titles, anyway.

SEATTLE – Personally, I don’t believe in witches, warlocks, hoodoo, voodoo or mythical beings from Magic Mountain. And I don’t believe in destiny.  (Well, except for that special cocktail waitress from Vegas all those years ago, Destiny. I do believe in her.)

Seriously, the higher presence in my world has better things going and doesn’t care who wins spelling bees or pie eating contests or auto races or soccer matches. That includes Sunday’s MLS championship.

So what about this talk of destiny as it relates to Real Salt Lake? In my world, "destiny" is the understated sum of less tangible elements. It’s where belief and confidence meet circumstance and luck. I do believe in the power of positive thinking and visualization. Simply put, if you believe in the benign forces of "destiny," it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

So, I guess in a sense, I do believe in destiny – but only as we create our own. Make sense?

Any-who, here’s my piece from MLSnet.com on the disparate dispositions of the teams in Sunday’s final: one side full of stars, one side forging forth on the mighty winds of momentum.

(Oh, the headline: If you’re too young too remember, go check out Back to the Future and see the moment when George McFly stumbles over his words while trying to court his future beloved.)

Star-divide

Meanwhile, Landon Donovan has earned yet another trophy for his stuffed mantle. He claimed the 2009 MLS MVP honor, simultaneously given the finger yet again to the legion of Donovan haters (a group that I will never understand).

Oh, and Preki is officially in charge at Toronto after all those years of doing more with less at Chivas USA. The Goats really screwed this one up. But it's TFC's gain.

As for the goings-on in Seattle, the teams are here now. They begin practicing here tomorrow – but they workouts will be double top secret sessions, apparently. Media will be allowed to see only the last 15 minutes of training. Which makes sense, of course. I’m sure that Bruce Arena and Jason Kreis are planning big, big surprises that they don’t want publicized. Nick Rimando at striker, perhaps? Landon "MVP" Donovan as a center half in the ol’ W-V formation for Bruce’s bunch?

Closed practices? Seriously, guys?

Closed practices

Are the norm in Seattle. Usually only on “recovery” days are media allowed for the full session, that and the rare scrimmage v the semi-pros.

In most MLS cities ...

… closed practices are pretty rare. It’s a little odd for a league that struggles so with exposure. They can’t have it both ways … eager for coverage on the one hand, and difficult on the other. Just sayin’ …
