Looking for a MLS team..
Firstly, I stumbled upon this site yesterday looking for my "Daily Soccer Fix", hehe...
Anywho, I live in Arizona and we lack any sort of Soccer team, which leaves me grasping for any news of the US Men's National Team, and of course my La Liga club, Barcelona. The MLS to me is something of an after thought, as it is with most soccer fans, but frankly it's my league and I want to be a part of it. I was hoping that the people here could help me pick an MLS team to root for, which I'm already leaning heavily on Seattle. (A great fan base, Kasey Keller and supported by Xbox?!) I'm sure most everyone here has allegiances to one MLS team or another, so think of me as a fan free agent. Thanks for any nudging you guys give me.
And for the record, no LA team. :-)

I always root for home team or closer, so I guess the closest to you would be Real Salt Lake (Utah) or Houston Dynamo (Texas). Dynamo is the number one West Conference team. That’s really all I got for you. Sorry if that didn’t help lol.

Pick the team that you can watch most consistently on TV. If you get them all (MLS Direct Kick), then you need to wait for a favorite player or moment. I’m a Red Bulls guy because of Altidore, Zimmerman, and living in NY.
I like your choice of words, by the way, because it is our league.
And screw Barca… Atletico Madird for life.
Research
As the average sports fan tends to behanve, they will be biased towards their team. Stop listening to others, do a little research, watch some game tape, and actually experience a team before you chose your allegiance. It helps that the club is close to you, but I’m 8 hours away from Dallas and I will support the Hoops until I die. We miss you, Kenny…
But, yes, most of all, Support MLS over all.
So hard to pick
I never did it with the EPL, or La Liga. I have no ties to those cities, nor their organizations.
For MLS I followed C-bus way back in the McBride era, and then I drifted for a while.
Now its easy for me. My city has top flight soccer, and a trophy in year one. They have the best keeper to come out the state/nation with rising stars that will get to Europe (Zakuani, Montero) and fading stars that will likely retire here (Ljungberg).
Did I mention they just won a Cup?
Oh, and that next year they will more than double the league’s average attendance? Plus they play an attacking, generally ball at floor style that is kind of Arsenal but with less skill.
Lastly, did I mention that they just won a Cup?
Only if you're willing to boo santa claus.

Do what I did to pick a EPL team
Just watch matches, lots of them. As you watch more and more, you find yourself rooting for some teams more than others and maybe one team more than all.
This is the right approach
Though no one can call you a bandwagon fan if you support NYRB this season!
You may also want to consider checking out a few games live, if only to see why Steve is justified in his frustration of MLS refs. Though, you will cease complaining about refs in other sports in general thanks to MLS!

Seconded
You’re better off going into it with an open mind and see who you like, rather than picking someone you’ve never seen only to find that their style disgusts you.
Haven’t watched enough MLS or EPL yet to form a real solid allegiance to one team, though I suspect I’ll always have a bit of a soft spot for Tottenham (first highlight I ever saw from the EPL was Paul Robinson’s 90-yard goal against Watford).
Supporters Groups
One thing I would suggest is see if there are SGs within the area that you live. From talking with LA and Denver based Sounders fans that having that local community really helps.
It provides community for the transplants who support the club.
Whoever you support you should find such a group, or form a group.
Connection
I would pick a team that you have some sort of connection. You have family in a certain city or you just like a certain city or lived there, etc. Or you could just pick a team that has players you like. I would try and go to a game. I didnt even watch MLS till i went to my first Houston Dynamo game, now im a fanatic.
If you care about TV appearance here are the numbers for this year http://bit.ly/W92CI
Galaxy, Dynamo, Sounders, DC United, Chicago Fire or even the new team the Union are all good bets.
You don't pick your team
Your team picks you.
I believe there is a PDL team in Arizona somewhere.
