Landon Donovan arrives at Everton on Saturday

Just in case anyone was wondering about your favorite new U.S. export, Landon Donovan, he will land ashore at England’s northwest port city on Saturday, but he will not participate in the club’s third round FA Cup match against Carlisle United.

“Landon arrives at the Club tomorrow,” manager David Moyes told Everton’s official web site non Friday. “We’ll have to see what he brings. He’s got pace and he’s an extra body for us, which is important.”

Hmmm. Let’s hope he hasn’t already been reduced to “extra body” status.

Moyes also says he wants to bring in one or two other reinforcements during the just-opened transfer window. Considering the club is broke as a kid’s toy three days after Christmas, it’s unlikely that any of these hired guns will be name brand types. The Toffees simply don’t have the cash.  Either way, we’ll have to wait a little longer to see how Donovan stacks up British might.

A week from tomorrow, Everton travels to north London to take on Arsenal. And won’t that be delicious?

If David Beckham were to come to the MLS

and struggled to find his footing when going to a less challenging league for three-sixth months and then went back home to England would that mean he was a failure as a player for all time?

In the end the three months Donovan will be there will be pretty meaningless, but it is still good experience for him, even if only as a super-sub. He’s going to be on a team on a team game, how he does will also be determined by how well his teammates do and how well he fits in with his teammates. If his most useful skill was beautiful crosses and there was no one to receive them he could be in trouble, just like if nobody is able to execute a quick pass to him on a counter.

If I recall

Donovan struggled last time he came to Europe. I’ll be interested to see if he’s more adaptable to the huge increase in pace that playing in the EPL entails. It often takes even the very best imports a season or so to be able to carve out a bit of space and time for themselves and Everton are one of the more lively, pressing outfits.

At the risk of coming over chauvanist and a bit sniffy, I’m waiting to see how he does but my expectations are low.

I just hope he gets a chance

and isn’t relegated to garbage minutes, I guess it will be up to him, though.
