Disappointment litters the evening in U.S. loss to Honduras
I’m wondering if perhaps what Bob Bradley needs most today is a calendar.
Not a little desk model, but a big ol’ sucker that he can plaster up on the locker room wall. Then he needs to turn it to June and circle the date of departure for South Africa.
Because there are a bunch of guys in the national team pool, apparently, many of them just hanging around the fringes of World Cup consideration but in the picture nonetheless, who have forgotten what’s at stake.
That’s the only thing I can assume based on Saturday’s evening of raging disappointment at the
The
Jonathan Bornstein was the only starter who seemed to get it, who seemed attuned to the fact that spots are still up for grabs. Ironically, Bornstein is one of perhaps two players, along with Benny Feilhaber, whose spot is reasonably secure.
The rest of ‘em? Are you kidding me? That’s the response Bradley and

Outside of Bornstein, I can’t say that anyone did themselves any favors. On the other side?
Marvell Wynne – good heavens. The next good cross he hits will be his first. Jimmy Conrad may have mis-played his way out of contention. Yes, the penalty kick was a tad soft. But for me that’s not the point. Conrad simply cannot do something like that. To hook a guy in plain view of the referee, inside the penalty area, especially when he’s carrying a yellow card? He simply has to know better. He’s a veteran. If he is not going to make smarter choices, who will?
I could go on. Bottom line: From a team level, the match didn’t mean much, so there’s nothing really lost. But from an individual performance standpoint, it’s hard to see how the night could have brought more disappointment.

some injuries
Pontius and Alston were having hamstring issues during camp (Alston also didn’t play on the GA tour), and Tracy left the camp (tendonitis).
I was more disappointed in Bob Bradley than anyone else
This team had no chance of winning. With Findley and Cunningham at forward, and no real creative midfielders in the starting 11, its no surprise that our only scoring chances came from corner kicks, free kicks, counter attacks, and long shots.
You’re right about Bornstein though. In fact, I might even be OK with him starting in South Africa if necessary. But that’s more than I could say for anyone else on this roster.
agree and disagree
“With Findley and Cunningham at forward, and no real creative midfielders in the starting 11,”
The first half of that was Bob Bradley’s choice. On the second half, though, we don’t really have any midfielders significantly more creative than Fielhaber who were available for selection. Remember, the available roster was pretty much just MLS and Scandinavia.
On the forwards, yeah, it was an odd pairing. I mean, maybe he was trying to see them in the same game to get the best feel for which might go to S.A, because only one of them will, but if they do go, they won’t be playing with a guy who plays just like themselves.
'Gentlemen' he said,
'I don't need your organization,
I've shined your shoes,
moved your mountains and marked your cards,
but Eden is burning.
Either get ready for elimination,
or else your heart must have the courage,
for the changing of the guards.'
I think the biggest reason the criticism of the team wasn't harsher
is because so many people put so little stock in the match. I haven’t seen many reports that defended the quality of play or thought the team’s play wasn’t dreadful, but the fact is that few cared about it. So Marvell Wynne was an abomination. Big deal. He wasn’t ever going to make the World Cup roster and in a World Cup year, nobody is really looking at the next cycle. I don’t think the lack of criticism is really a matter of letting the players slide, but more apathy than anything else.

Let's not rush to judgement...
This game was ruined in the 18th minute by a moment of stupidity from Jimmy Conrad. Stevo, the penalty and send off were not harsh. That foul fell into 1 of the 2 categories of penalties: 1) Bad foul deserving of a penalty, and 2) Totally stupid foul. I’ll let you all guess which one it fell into. And considering it was committed while carrying a card…whew, you’d think Conrad was 18 on Cap #1.
So the game went into the pooper right there. Marvell Wynn wasn’t as bad as being made out. Sure, his crosses weren’t great, but that’s not his game. He was of no fault for any of the goals. Positioning could’ve been better on 3rd, but still wasn’t his.
I was happy with the play of the FC Dallas players. Cunningham was stranded up front, just as Findley was. Heath Pearce wasn’t bad at all on the right side, and Dax showed a little something for his brief time. And whose with me here, I would be fine with Goodsen starting in South Aftrica! He can hold it down in the middle, and get forward on the set pieces.

we don't disagree on the PK
I just said it was a little soft. As I also said, it was a stupid thing to do. The PK? i’ve seen it called and not called. but i certainly don’t agree with people who the ref shouldn’t have called it. from there, yeah, the game may have been ruined, but I still would have liked to have seen a little more initiative from guys who NEEDED a big game, ya know?
That may excuse
the result, but, from the reports I’ve read it appears individuals didn’t have good games. The number of men on the field shouldn’t affect that.
Yes, many didn't have good games
because they were trying to cover for the loss of a player. It’s always harder to play with 10. And let’s not forget, Honduras was no patsy, and many of their top-line players were on the pitch.
But some who were reported to have bad games weren’t as bad as reported. Marvell Wynn wasn’t nearly as bad as others would have you think. Is he on the WC squad? Not unless there is an emergency. His crosses were not good, but few players had good service. And I’ve barely heard mention of Goodsen’s outing, which was quality. He learned that at FCD you know! ;)

Wynne
I think Marvell Wynne’s crossing has improved tremendously. It’s gone from atrocious to merely bad.
Now that's funny!
Agreed on Marvell, but his defending itself is pretty good. Like I said, it would have to be an emergency, like lots of other defenders being dead, before he sees South Africa.
