Kenny Cooper moving on loan to Plymouth Argyle

Kenny Cooper ... on the move again

Kenny Cooper is seriously on the move these days, relocating more often than an Army brat.

It appears the big fellow will not spend his spring in Germany, but in England. Phil Stephens at Dallas Soccer News has the scoop.

Stephens, who was shooting pictures and writing about the NASL back when most of today’s soccer-loving whipper-snappers were just a fantasy in some 8th-grader’s daydream, says Cooper’s return from injury to the field at 1860 Munich wasn’t going to come quickly enough.

He desperately wants to get back on Bob Bradley’s radar before the South African summer. So 1860 has loaned Cooper to Plymouth Argyle of England’s second tier. Plymouth is currently 22nd in the Coca Cola Championship, which puts them squarely in the drop zone, although recent signs of life have everybody in a festive relegation rally mood.

Plymouth looks like a good destination, as the man in charge knows the young American well. This is the club that New England Revolution assistant Paul Mariner just took over. In fact, Mariner is doing a bang-up job there, having led the club to three wins in six matches since taking charge last month.

Don’t forget, Mariner was a striker in his days as an England international. So tutelage under the man won’t hurt Cooper a bit. Eric Wynalda, among others, has credited Mariner with doing great things for his personal development.

Whatever works out...

If he can get Plymouth out of relegation trouble, then go back to 1860 and get them back to Bundesliga, then he will be “Super” Cooper in 3 countries!!

I like Plymouth

It’s a nice city, although it’s rather stuck in the middle of nowhere. Does he surf? There’s good surfing to be had round there.

Oh, and I used to live in the same street as Mariner.

I’m really going to have to work hard to make a more pointless post than this one in the year to come…….

No, no, you're doing fine...

Keep doing what you’re doing. That post proves you’ve got the pointless thing down. ;)

Plymouth?

C’mon, I thought Kenny Cooper was pretty beastly in the MLS. So, how is he stuck at Plymouth Argyle? Is it really better being at Plymouth Argyle than FC Dallas? I mean really, the Fire would welcome him back, considering Frank Klopas’s new urge for attacking players. I just can’t get my mind around this. Cooper is a good target man, good at set pieces, and a very good striker by MLS standards. He just seems to be better than that to me.

CC Championship is indeed ...

… roughly the same level as MLS. (Cue the big Brit snob debate about the pitiful level of MLS vs. the glory of England footy in 3, 2, 1 … ). That said, Cooper is making WAY more money over there than here. There’s something to be said for an athlete cashing in while he can.

It can only

be for the money (no shame in that, btw – it’s not like he’s choosing between 50 and 60k a week, is it?).

You’d imagine he’d get more exposure as a potential WC player by returning to MLS and a relegation slog isn’t known for being an ideal tune-up for international tourneys…

Sr?

Why does every story involving Cooper also involve his dad?

by GeoJock on Jan 29, 2010 10:43 AM EST reply actions

I believe his agent is his Dad. Agents usually do the talking and negotiations.

Kenny Sr used to be ...

… his agent, but he turned over the keys the KCJ car about three years ago. obviously, he’s still involved, but in a less official level.

He's not at FCD because...

they offered him very little money. The wisdom of MLS says you can’t offer Designated Player money to an American who is already playing here. So he gets sold to a 2nd Div. German club. Make sense? I didn’t think so.

I’m beginning to believe that Ken Sr. has a little of Tiger’s Dad in him.
