MLS All-Star game headed to Kansas City?
TORONTO – I’m hearing some talk that the swell new grounds in Kansas City may start landing big MLS events sooner rather than later. If I were a betting man, I’d put a few C-notes on the 2011 All-Star game going to either Kansas City or to Red Bull Arena. From what I understand, both places are in the running with others way behind.
The venue may just depend on the opponent. MLS officials are courting Barcelona, which would be a very attractive opponent. But it may not make financial sense to get the Catalan giants for a “one-off.” So there are a lot of moving parts in the whole thing, with venues and the number of games that might be arranged elsewhere all up for consideration.
Barcelona’s asking price will probably land between $1.5 million and $2 million. So, if MLS and SUM can arrange another game or two, the cost becomes more palatable. Otherwise, they’ll have to charge a princely sum for tickets – and that might make New York a better market for the contest.
But there are other teams in the running, too. I believe Sporting Lisbon may be one of the second-choice targets. A team like that (like Everton, Fulham, West Ham and other, past MLS All-Star opposition) can be had for something in the area of $200,000.
By the way, it would be a bit of a leap of faith to assign the game to Kansas City. The new stadium will be ready for the 2011 season, but perhaps not to begin it. I’m hearing that the opener may be pushed into June, just as it was with PPL Park outside Philly this year. So, having such a big event so shortly after a stadium open carries some risks; they could only keep fingers crossed that all the bugs were worked out.
Oh, one more thing about the 2011 MLS All-Star game. I’m also hearing that league officials here in Toronto are talking about moving the game back to weekends, where it was before they tried the weeknight format a few years ago.

For what it's worth
We talked to their ticketing department and they indicated the first few games will be at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
I’m also close to people who are working on the stadium. I get the impression that the stadium will certainly be done by June, but the exterior pieces like the entry plaza and pavilions may not be done. It seems like 2012 would be a better time to showcase the completed complex.
Also, the Manchester United game this summer brought in 50,000 people at Arrowhead Stadium—a team like Barca would likely draw similar interest. If you were OnGoal, would you rather have 18,000 at the new stadium or 45K+ at Arrowhead?

There will be no games at CAB.
None. Robb Heineman has said over and over that will not happen. 8-10 games on the road to start the season. And the stadium will definitely be ready by June. Actually they’ve already announced the first game will be June 9 (Thursday night) on ESPN.

Good to know.
Also, I just remembered that the 2012 MLB All Star Game will be in Kansas City. I doubt they want to have both in a span of a few weeks, particularly due to the problems that leads for both with marketing.

I think Steve is saying the MLS ASG will be 2011.

He's saying it's a two-team race.
I’m just stating that if they didn’t have it in KC in 2011, they would likely have to wait until 2013 to do so.

Got ya.
I wouldn’t mind seeing one of KC and NY get ASG, the other get MLS Cup in 2011. I think KC would be better suited for MLS Cup, as Steve said, with the stadium opening so soon before the ASG. We know that Red Bull Arena will get one of the two next year.
They have not determined the MLS Cup site for next year, correct?

a weekend All Star would be great
I remember last year’s here in Salt Lake, and it was hard to get fans pumped up for a midweek match. There were a lot of events that didn’t get nearly enough attention or fans due to it being midweek. Heck I would be up for them having a Sunday match and do some fun things on Friday and Saturday to get fans (both dedicated and new) involved. The All Star match should be a great tool for the hosting team to really grow their brand.
Possible Memo to Kansas City Fans from the Wizards' Front Office
Fans,
For 2011 we are bringing you a new stadium, the all-star game, and re-branding.
In case you have not noticed, you are now Sporting Wood.
Much love,
