Just what IS the story of Schellas Hyndman’s vintage jacket?

FC Dallas manager Schellas Hyndman (coach, martial artist ... fashion maven) in warmer days, before he needed to bust out the Brown Bomber.

First, let’s clear this up: No, FC Dallas manager Schellas Hyndman isn’t planning to ask David Beckham to “exchange jerseys” after this week’s playoff game. Although, given Beckham’s hipster fashion sense, would it really be so stunning if the former England captain wanted to do swappies with the FC Dallas manager?

I talked to Schellas this afternoon, getting a head start on some advance work for SI.com.  But before we got into the game and talking about his side’s trip to L.A. for the weekend's Western Conference final, we had a laugh about all the attention that brown leather jacket is getting.

Seriously, if that thing doesn't have it's own Facebook page by now, then sometime has gone terribly wrong with the world's social media functions. (By the way, my favorite jacket zinger so far: Hey, Schellas: 1983 called, and it wants it’s jacket back.)

“Isn’t that something? I mean, nothing about how good my hair looked or how handsome I am … only about that darned jacket,” he said with a big laugh.

Hyndman’s idea was to look good along the Rio Tinto sidelines rather than wearing team apparel as usual. So he packed the slick slacks but apparently forgot to pack the nicer jacket and well …

“So I got stuck with the 1970s-looking jacket … but it turned out to be a big hit!” he said.

So, will he be rockin’ the Brown Bomber this week out in L.A.?

“As I just told someone else on a radio interview, you’ll just have to show up to find out,” he said.

Didn't think the look was too bad.

But I still think that success on the field is more important. I don’t care how well it’s gone so far, the end result is the most important. And here is the point: No trophy, still not good enough as a coach for the professional level. Win the trophy and I take it all back.

Not that bad

You’re right, it wasn’t that bad. It was just so out-of-the-ordinary. It caught everyone by surprise … then kind of took on a little life of its own. Personally, I think it’s good for the team. It deflects a little pressure from the players by keeping the overall atmosphere light.
