Monday pursuits: FIFA seeks better justice, Raul seeks a new address and more
Monday’s suck. So do some of my opinions.
But I won’t let that stop me. Here are five thoughts to get the week moving:
FIFA proposed a rule change last week that would limit the damage to a defending team adjudged guilty of denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity inside its penalty area. Read about it here.
Currently if that happens a referee is obligated to award a penalty kick and eject the guilty party. That has always struck me as double jeopardy. A penalty kick (and perhaps a yellow card) seems more than sufficient. As it is, doing both seems overly punitive.
In one sense, I always advocate justice. Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time, as they say. The problem is that referees are human and they don’t always get it right. If the man in the middle sees it wrong and awards a spot kick, the defending team has a chance to rally past the hardship. If the man in the middle gets it wrong, awards a spot shot and leaves the team a man short, it really might be a bridge too far.
Let’s hope FIFA does get it right and approves this change in the laws.
Raul to the Red Bulls? Who knows? He’d be fun to watch.
This much I do know. When it comes to the next famous set of feet about to tear up the MLS fields and bring the misery down on hapless foes, I always say the same thing: Wake me up when they call a press conference to make it all official.
Through the years, everyone from Luis Figo to Thierry Henry and many, many others in between have been rumored to be on their merry way. Let me ask you: How many goals have Henry and Figo combined for in MLS. Oh, yes, that’s right. Exactly as many as me and my favorite house gnome have. Zero.
First, dangling MLS is one of bookmarked pages from the European agents’ handbook. They toss MLS out willy-nilly because of the vagaries of the negotiating process associated with the top-tier
Besides all that, a compliant European media generally doesn’t have the right contacts in the
On the other hand, there probably are talks that go on between some of these foreign luminaries and representatives of MLS. But that stuff is as routine as lunch. In other words, deals and trades are discussed every day. It’s the same way you talk about getting a new car, or upgrading your TV situation with one of the splashy new flat screens. You talk about it – a lot – but only occasionally pull the trigger. So there’s always plenty of chit-chat, but plenty of things have to line up just right for it to happen.
Is Raul truly considering a move to MLS? Quite possibly so. He’s in the sweet spot, old enough to have the experience and marketing value, young enough to make a difference on the field. Will it happen? I’d give it one chance in four.
Seattle Sounders FC has proved once again that they “get it,” having identified a chink in the armor and then moving forward to fix it.
The Sounders have hired Arlo White to be the new “voice of the Sounders.” White is British, with most of his experience coming from work with the BBC. He represents a significant upgrade from Kevin Calabro, who had a basketball background but who could sometimes be absolutely brutal while calling soccer. The Sounders recognized a need and filled it, and good on ‘em for that.
But there is one element here that bothers me a bit. It’s the ongoing notion that all things soccer are better when read with a British accent. I’ve made my case here before, so I won’t stomp over the same old ground. Suffice to say, there really are plenty of American voices out there who have plenty to say about the game. I know about the rich history of the game in the
All that said, good luck to White. Go knock it out of the park, eh? (That’s an American saying that means “I know you’ll do well.”)
Freddy Adu’s first goal for his Greek will surely get a lot stirring in the pants from some U.S. Soccer supporters who are still convinced that the little man is the answer. They may even see this as a harbinger for movement toward South African inclusion. Three words: Not. Gonna. Happen. Bob Bradley has done nothing to indicate that Adu is in the plans. And he’s right on that account. Adu, 20, still has lots of growing up do to. He simply has to learn that it’s all bigger than him, that being a part of a team means subjugating the self. In fairness, I haven’t been around Adu or his managers since he left MLS in 2007. But I don’t get the feeling that much has changed – nor will it until he understands this larger snapshot of reality: there are lots of good players around, and he’s simply got to work harder on the deficiencies of his game, and work more within the structure of a team. Only then will Adu move past the sticking point. He’s been stuck at the same point along the development continuum for about four years now.
Finally, just curious about this: Will an expansion side in MLS (probably north of the

Boo to FIFA rules change, yay to White
Hey, Steve — man I couldn’t disagree with you more on the proposed rules change. The way the rules are now are the way the game should be played. Yes, as you point out, the man with the whistle might get the call wrong, which would really hurt the defending team. But the answer to that is not to change the rules — it’s better refs and more help, particularly behind the goal line, which would help in so many other problem areas as well.
But you are spot on with bidding good riddance to Calabro. White may be British, but he knows the game and will be a joy to listen to. He called a Sounders-Dynamo match last year and the difference in commentary was remarkable. Some Seattle homers are grousing about losing Calabro (a local legend for his days with the Sonics), but I couldn’t be more thrilled with the result.

BC Place is going to have a retractable roof when the Whitecaps start playing there
But maybe that’s not what you are asking?
This is a pretty cool stadium with a roof and about the right size for MLS, but it’s a little out of the way to check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astana_Arena

Are there? Unfortunately, I’ve always thought that in the US, other than maybe JP Dellacamera (who Philly already grabbed), you had the choice of a guy who knows the commenting gig or knows soccer, but not both. Maybe Glenn Davis, but he’s not leaving Houston anytime soon.
'Gentlemen' he said,
'I don't need your organization,
I've shined your shoes,
moved your mountains and marked your cards,
but Eden is burning.
Either get ready for elimination,
or else your heart must have the courage,
for the changing of the guards.'
funny you should mention
i keep planning to cobble together a list of the best announcers in the game here. i do think there are a few good ones, or at least good ones in the making. … you know what … never mind … i’m gonna stop here and make it a blog entry for later in the week. (you’re right, by the way about JP and Glenn. those guys are real pros who also know the game.)

The first team to go with a roofed stadium?
How about Phoenix? I think it could be an amazing market, but you can’t play in that heat. A roof would be necessary if they are to ever get a team. Not that it will happen in the next few years, but five or ten years down the road? I could see it. Vegas would have to go the same direction if they’re ever interested.

Fifa Rule Change
I would think a yellow along with the PK might be more fitting. That way, if a player has a clean record during the game, he’s still in. However, if he was already on the fence, he’ll still end up with the red, but possibly more deservedly so…
Also, good to see the American boys getting some quality action over there in Greece. There is nothing worse than watching these kids go over seas and have their careers fade away…
Wrong, wrong, wrong on Law Change
And here’s why: So what if it’s a double whammy. Does the defender know that the offensive player is in the area? He should. Does the defender know that he is the last man? Probably. Does the defender know that if he fouls the player and it meets all the requirements of a goal scoring opportunity that he will be sent off? Without question. And he does it anyway? Deserving of a send off. So let’s get this straight. FIFA (ie Sepp Blatters dumness on most high) wants to lesson the penalty for a DGSO in the area, but keep the send off for outside the area? Now that’s just silly.
BTW, while he may be one of the more well known, JP Delacamara is a terrible commentator. He raises his voice when it’s not needed, blathers on about nothing when true build up play is occurring, and has no descernable signature call for a goal. Not that one is necessary, but when your lacking in other areas, you’d better have a good one. And he certainly does not.

I like the law change
What about the cases where the challenge isn’t so clear-cut but it does involve a clear goal scoring oppertunity. As a defender, If I think I have a legitimate shot at getting the ball I want to be able to go for it without fearing an unfair judgement by a ref that would put my team at such an extreme disadvantage. Bad calls are part of the game, but this particular situation is so extreme it should be rolled back.
oc phil
Regarding the PK+red rule
I’d say “last man” fouls should only be a yellow if the defender makes a legitimate attempt to play the ball but fails, but still a red if there’s obviously no intent to play the ball or if the goalkeeper is out of position to the point that scoring is a foregone conclusion (similar to how a penalty-shot offense in hockey results in an automatic goal instead if the goalie is not in net when it occurs). The penalty needs to be serious, but at the same time if it’s a close call it should not be an all-or-nothing (PK+red or “play on”) decision with no option for the ref to call anything else.
You don't understand the Law...
There is no allowance for “I tried to play the ball, but just missed and hit the player instead.” Intention was taken out of the Laws. It is now “careless, reckless or using excessive force.” (Taken directly from FIFA Laws of the Game Website) Nowhere in those words do you see intentionally. If you go for the ball but miss, and you are “denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick” (same site), then you must be sent off, no question. And that is the way it should be. You all may want to take a gander at the Laws of the Game now and again.
Chad the Ref
But that's the point;
people are saying intention should be taken into account. Currently it can’t be leaving refs no leeway.
Intention isn't observable
so that is just putting more room for error by making the call subjective. Simple solution as a defender is to not miss the ball or don’t get put in that situation.

The foul stops an obvious goal scoring opportunity
There aren’t that many in the game. If a player stops one with a foul, whether it be in the penalty area or not, that player should be sent off.
We, as referees, always have an option. We don’t go out to the field with the idea that we end the game 7 v. 7. But if the scenario warrants a send off, then that’s what it should be.
