FSC HD FAIL
FSC HD supposedly launched in January, after a seemingly endless wait. Yet as we all know, barely anyone gets the channel because most of the major providers did not pick the channel up. FSC FAIL.
FSC needs to up its campaign to get providers to pick up its HD channel. Maybe MLS should step in and offer some dough to add more incentive. This is getting absolutely ridiculous.
Sports I can get in HD right now on Sunday morning using Comcast Bay Area, just going down my channel list:
PGA Golf
NFL
NBA
NCAAB Men's
Golf Lessons
Snowboarding
Track and Field
NHL
Baseball - Caribbean World Series
Nascar
NCAAB Women's (2 diff games on 2 different HD channels)
Polish Motorcycle Racing
Deer Hunting
Meanwhile FSC is sitting there in standard definition for the FREAKING ARSENAL CHELSEA GAME! )(#$(!&!)@#$&!!! The most popular sport in the world can't even get HD before NCAA women's basketball, golf lessons, track and field, snowboarding, polish motorcycle racing, and deer hunting?!?!?!?! This is absolutely ridiculous.

Take a step back. Remember the time when finding out about today’s game would have meant hitting the internet hoping for a good Reuters article? I remember feigning sickness in high school in the late 90s every year on the day of the Champions League final because it was more or less the only time I’d get to see soccer outside of trips to RFK and DC United games that were televised (a large chunk weren’t) on the old HTS.
I’m not trying to play the crotchety old man here, but the game was on TV, and that’s still pretty awesome. I didn’t even have FSC until 2004 because our various local cable monopoly didn’t even offer it (free or pay). FSC has plenty of issues (consistently incorrect formations/lineups, continued use of Christian Miles, etc), but the fact that cable companies aren’t picking up the HD version of a soccer network shouldn’t come as a shock. This is still the country where a commercial openly laughing at soccer was played in major ad windows (NFL broadcasts) last year. I’m not saying we should be satisfied, but being furious seems a bit out of line.

#1: Great freaking name. Almost just coughed up coffee on my work shirt.
#2: I could say the same thing in response to you: imagine if you were a deer hunting fan, polish motorcycle racing fan, or snowboarding fan in 1997. You couldn’t even find your sport on TV ever. And now you can watch it in HD. Unlike those sports, soccer was at least available in 1997 on TV. And it’s still not in HD. Those obscure sports have bypassed soccer in TV availability. That is ridiculous! FSC is turning into the equivalent of ESPN 8 “The Ocho” from the movie Dodgeball.

Biff Malibu…now, if we could just get Hercules T. Rockefeller over here, we’d be in business.
Here’s the thing: I can watch plenty of soccer in HD. Premier League, La Liga, MLS, World Cup qualifiers, and the World Cup all show on ESPN. So, while it’s frustrating that a particular big game was not available in HD while virtually every other sport in the world was, it’s not like we’re completely screwed.
I’m glad you brought up “The Ocho”, because I’ve compared FSC to that more than once. However, this particular failure doesn’t seem like their fault. They’re sending out an HD signal. Cable and satellite providers aren’t motivated to pick up the feed. Grant Wahl’s Twitter had something today about DirecTV negotiating with Fox to get this done, so apparently the wheels are turning very slowly. FSC is not a high-value channel. There’s not some regular, guaranteed source of high viewer numbers. So, cable and satellite providers were slow to add it in a lot of places, and now they’re slow to upgrade. It sucks, but it’s not a surprise.
I am intrigued with your idea of MLS trying to push the issue, though. MLS games on ESPN come through in HD and the experience is much better. Seeing so much more of the field is crucial in soccer, and MLS will appeal to more people if it’s presented in the best way possible.

I see both sides
Chest … you’re right to sprinkle a bit of perspective into the conversation. Well done. On the other hand, they shouldn’t tease us with that little “LIVE IN HD” graphic in the corner. That’s just mean!

Don't blame FSC
Call your provider, then email them, then call them again. Providers aren’t going to pay a provider for a channel that nobody is screaming that they want. The reality is that most providers will add this one on for people who subscribe to their sports package already, so they won’t see any increased revenue from adding it, at least not most cable providers The only thing that will capture their attention is customers saying to them “add it or I leave”, threaten to go to dish network that has the channel as part of their HD package the goes with their America’s 250 package (their top plan without premium movie channels) so to get it and their 90 HD channels it will cost you $57.99 for the first year, $72.99 a month after that. DirectTV isn’t offering the channel yet.
I have a feeling that with the launch of Fox Soccer Plus, that both DTV and most Cable providers will launch FSC HD as part of a package they can charge your for in combo with FSP, don’t be surprised if you have to pay $14.99 a month to get both of those stations, I had hoped that FSC would have offered their HD coverage for free to the groups already carrying their normal broadcast, but from what I have heard that isn’t the case.
If you want FSC in HD, call, email, call, email, repeat until you have it.
