Soccernet is out; SI.com is in
There’s a lot of movement these days in our little niche market of
So you might need to sleuth around a bit to locate your favorite writer, editor or blogger right now. As for yours truly, you’ll no longer find my work at ESPN Soccernet. Rather, the folks over at SI.com asked me to pick up my pens and pencils and wander over to their site. I was thrilled to oblige.
I’ll mostly be covering MLS, perhaps occasionally sticking my journalistic oars into international waters. (I’ll also continue to write for the MLSnet site and for this site, of course.) My first piece at SI.com went up yesterday.
The move from Soccernet wasn’t a difficult call. You needed a CSI techie to find MLS articles these days over at Soccernet now, not just my own, but those written by esteemed former ESPN colleague Jeff Carlisle. Ives Galarcep moved over to FoxSoccer.com earlier this year. New management is in charge at Soccernet, and I don’t get the feeling that MLS is a big part of the plan going forward.
There is some other shifting, zigging and zagging in the domestic soccer journo world. As I know that much yawning will greet that news, I won’t beat down the audience with particulars. But more good stuff is on the way; it will benefit readers and supporters as the options expand. There will be more folks talking and squawking soccer on ever increasing and improving platforms. That can’t be a bad thing.

Old News
If the articles on soccernet were milk you’d have thrown them out 6 weeks ago. Demarcus Beasley has probably logged 5,000 miles on his new car, yet when I jump on soccernet for some tasty soccer nuggets, I’m reminded his old one burned on February 3rd.
Meet you at SI.com
TV
Nothing is constant but change, I suppose. I’ll be looking for your pieces on SI. Does this mean we will see fewer soccer games on ESPN? More international and less MLS? Or does this just impact the internet site?
I think ESPN ...
… is pretty committed to its TV partnerships with soccer. The internet site is committed, too, just perhaps not to U.S. soccer happenings

Sounds like a good thing, Congratulations.
I read Si.coms soccer pages more regularly than ESPN, so that’s a good thing as far as I’m concerned. I find myself tending to run a few days behind reading either though, since I often have a game or two recorded on the DVR that I don’t want to spoil for myself.
Los Angeles is like Manchester. There is a red team that wins championships and a blue team that doesn't.
Suggestion
I know this probably isn’t your expertise, but you might want to put in a good word to your new bosses as SI.com about RSS feeds. The one attached to your story gives you a generic SI feed. It would be great if we could get one specifically designed for your stuff.

thanks for the tip
i think the tech end of these things takes just a bit of time. for instance, i know going forward my stories will have more of the standard SI story template. they were eager to get started, with or without the tech end being sorted out.

hey steve you gotta update your articles through twitter… one link and i can read all your stuff… that said, good move to SI.com you and wahl are very objective writers. keep up the good work
for every step forward ESPN TV soccer has taken, ESPN web soccer takes one back
SI.com with Wahl and Davis will be the top mainstream media site for coverage of the American game. I like this move.

soccernet
good move to head over to SI. soccernet seems to be lagging on original content these days. good luck steve!
Hey Steve,
you’ve been hinting at more SBnation sites for MLS teams for a while now. With the new RBNY site up, do you know if there are any plans for a Rapids specific blog? I need my fix that doesn’t come from the front office!
Looking forward to reading you in SI. a much better sports medium than espn as far as i’m concerned.
