MLS Power Rankings, preseason edition

Jason Kreis and Real Salt Lake show up first in the preseason MLS Power Rankings. (Uh, don't get too excited, Jason, there's no cash prize involved.)

If you read Daily Soccer Fix regularly and you don’t particularly care about Major League Soccer … well, this just isn’t going to be your week.

MLS begins season No. 15 on Thursday.  For some of you, that news really jingles your keys. For others, not so much.  That’s just where MLS is today, although I think the pool of engaged fans grows yearly, especially as the national footprint grows.

For the next 32 weeks, I’ll generate a weekly power ranking for SI.com. As the previews are just now rolling out, I haven’t done one just yet.  So, here is the pre-season power stack-up, a bold work based on careful analysis of preseason form and available talent across the field, filtered through the impact of off-season personnel churn and pollinated with Jack Bauer-like instinct.

In other words, I’m guessing, just like everyone else.

Enjoy.

1. RSL: They’re the champs. They’re confident. The manager won’t be complacent. Kyle Beckerman will be pissed off about not getting on the World Cup squad.

2. ColumbusGuillermo Barros Schelotto won’t last forever, but he knows how to manage his body and he’ll be inspired after last year’s early playoff exit.

Nos. 3-13 after the jump ...

Star-divide

 3. Seattle: In Sigi I trust. The man knows what it takes in MLS. The teaming scene at Qwest will continue to provide a boost to the entire enterprise.

4. Chicago: I picked Chicago ahead of Columbus in the East preview. Well, this Jon Busch release has me bamboozled. So, I’m punishing the Fire for said bamboozlement.

5. Toronto: I still worry about any defense that may have to start Nick Garcia, but I’ve watched Preki-bossed team win games with less talent for far too long.

6. Red Bull New York: I’m going against one of my own golden rules and putting too much stock in a pre-season friendly. But Hans Backe’s men DID look good against Santos the other night, didn’t they? (I suppose it’s more of a guideline than a rule.)

7. Colorado: This belief in Gary Smith’s shrewd, steady assemblage of good talent could seriously blow up in my face if the midfield talent can’t bounce back from off-season surguries. (I do hope they got a group rate, by the way.)

8. Los Angeles: A great back line (+) Landon Donovan (-) too many old legs in midfield (=) a mid-pack finish. But they’ll be OK in the playoffs.

9. Dallas: The Red Stripes will move up in the order if they go find a worthwhile second striker to partner and push Jeff Cunningham. Otherwise, they’ll be fighting for a playoff spot at the end with a bunch of other mid-pack sides.

10. D.C. United: United faithful really believe Danny Allsopp can strike at a reasonable rate. If they’re right, DC will push steadily up the rankings.

11. Houston: My man Kyle McCarthy at Goal.com picked center back Eddie Robinson as one of the most important figures in MLS this year.  If ER is back to 2008 form, this is a far better team.

12. New England: They’ll play hard. They’ll play smart. But it won’t matter if Taylor Twellman can’t get back on the field.

13. Kansas City: Manager Peter Vermes likes the personnel and elected not to make many changes. I think that was a mistake – but that’s why they play these games. Prove me wrong, Pete!

14. San Jose: By my best guess: Frank Yallop has about half a season to show he finally has the formula right around Buck Shaw. If he can’t show progress, I’ve got “Yallop” in the pool of first managers to be let go. He’s a helluva fellow, so I hope he has it figured out.

15. Philadelphia: Peter Nowak has built a nice defense and has a good situation in goal. He’s also got very little offensive firepower, and what he has is awfully young.

16. Chivas USA: I have no idea what a Martin Vasquez-coached team will look like, but I do know that depth seems to be a huge problem, and I see holes in the first-choice selections, too.

Amazing!!

Steve keep it coming. The MLS season is going to be so amazing. I just wished I lived in an MLS city.

Haha, you’re right about it pretty much being guesswork. I have no idea where I’d rank these teams right now.

Good work Steve...

What was with that Chicago move? Do they think they can get the Salvadoran keeper for less money? That will end up being a disaster for them.

Mernst2-If you live in a city with a Div. 2, 3, or even a PDL team (or even less) then get out and support them. DVR MLS games on the tube and watch them after supporting your closest hometown team.

Good question

Jon Busch’s release is a bit of a head-scratcher. He fell in form slightly from 2008 to 2009, but I still would have put him in the top half. $135K wasn’t outrageous for a quality starting ’keeper.

So you put stock in NYRB’s home victory over one Santos, but not United’s victory against a different Santos IN MEXICO? If preseason results mean anything (which is highly debatable) then DC has great things to look forward to this year.

I do agree with your top 3 though, and I guess that’s all that really matters.

by Martin Shatzer on Mar 23, 2010 8:31 PM EDT reply actions

that's a fair criticism

truth is, i didn’t see DCU’s match. I did see RBNY. Really, it’s more the way RBNY looked than the result itself. for all i know, United looked good … i just didn’t see it. like i said, it’s all guessing, and anybody who says otherwise is a big ol’ fibber.

Hey Now!

NYRB were dominant. As a member of GSS I look forward to these games. I also recommended to Chris Celletti who runs onceametro.com about maybe doing a He Said/He Said piece before the games between blog owners. I think this is a good way to build up the SB MLS blogs as they’ve been lacking compared to the rest of the SB nation blogs.

Wizards

The Wizards overhauled half of their roster this offseason. Did you not bother to actually look into that before claiming that Vermes “elected not to make many changes”

Show me a team that made more changes. Come on, Steve, you can do better than that!

Totally Agree

I was gonna make the exact same reply. I won’t disagree with the ranking, but I think they could be put in the 13 spot for completely opposite reasons. I would rank them low because they have SO MANY (almost a complete) new (what looks to be) starting 11 of players who have never played in MLS… EVER! That being said, absolutely nothing about your Wizards statement is true.

A little whine with dinner...

After reading that article, I’m not sure I believe he/they doesn’t/don’t care.

by DissidentAggressor on Mar 24, 2010 12:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe I should clarify…
My feelings aren’t nearly as extreme as the fella who wrote that article. It was probably more of a rally cry to fellow KC fans more than anything. I was just dissatisfied with the incomplete information given

by Seth Thompson on Mar 24, 2010 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions

It was a rallying cry ...

This level of reporting re: The Wizards is not new this season, this was just the worst example by country mile as it was so extraordinarily lazy and incorrect. I had a fairly polite response posted there that was simply deleted and it irritated me that Steve thought this tripe was beyond any sort of criticism .

If merely posting and not exercising any kind of diligence in reporting is how KC are to be treated then I am happy to heap on an try and generate a little bunker mentality for the local fan base. Nothing engages people more than feeling that are not getting a fair deal.

Rank us last if you will, but at least do it based on something tangible, like fact.

by James Starritt on Mar 24, 2010 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions

spot on

If this is the same Steve Davis, I’ve even written to him in the past for giving KC fans more of a fair shake than most, but it’s hard to get more wrong in a two sentence blurb.

Love seeing RSL at the top

I do fear that the team that only won 2 games on the road last year could struggle out of the gate as 4 of their first 5 are on the road. The upside is that RSL’s first road win in each of the previous 5 seasons has come in California (actually at the HDC), I am hoping that this year they can repeat that against San Jose.

I really think Chicago could collapse this year, but the biggest question mark in all of MLS for me in 2010 is DC United, a ton of changes but a lack of depth, they could miss the playoffs again or win it all.

Philly!!!!

Seems like they modeled themselves after the Eagles of old. Strong Defense. Keeping it young for the most part across the board. Thursday is gonna be awesome. Can not wait. Lets go Union!!

We haven’t even played yet and we’re not even the worst!

by JasonB on Mar 24, 2010 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

You are correct mernst2

and this is sad, considering OKC now has the NBA. This is a prime target for a new USL/NASL team. Then Tulsa can get one too (Roughnecks anyone) and an in-state rivalry will be born!

Check this out Chicago Fire fans...

Here is the “explaination” from Frank Klopas, the “General Manager” of the Fire. If this was a joke, it wouldn’t be funny. But it’s not a joke, which makes it funny. Unless you’re a Fire fan or have human emotions for a player like Jon Busch.

I Hope Yallop Doesn't Get Fired

He’s only had 2 years and he’s had a lot of bad luck between Huckerby’s injury, Convey sucking, and Cochrane and Nick Garcia flaming out. Cochrane was our first pick in the expansion draft after all. It takes managers time build something. Man United were awful for a while after Sir Alex Ferguson took over… he came very close to being fired. Yallop has a long track record of experience and success. Dumping him for a short term run of bad luck seems like a poor choice.

DCU writeup

Just got around to reading the East Predictions on CNNSI… biggest thing missing for DCU writeup is keeper Perkins. A good keeper can carry you a long, long way in MLS.
