Fearless Major League Soccer predictions for 2010

If I had to earn my keep as a prognosticator, I’d be living under a bridge, warming my hands over an open fire set inside a rusty old barrel. (Although I would try to watch tonight’s MLS opener – probably through the department store window with all the other homeless soccer fans.)

SI.com asked little ol’ me and other writers to provide 2010 MLS predictions. I’m not sure if they are pooling them to generate one big 10,000 jigawatt whopper of a cumulative prediction or if they’ll list each set individually. Either way, I ain’t afraid!

After consulting oracles, soothsayers, palm readers, fortune tellers and the local Mexican Bruja who sells delicious tacos on the side, here are my own bold predictions for 2010. (I left a few out because I don’t want to hack off my new bosses at SI.com. It’s the soccer writers’ version of letting the Big Guy beat you at golf. Good for job security, ya know? Because that whole living under a bridge thing really isn’t as romantic as it sounds.)

MLS Cup Champions: Columbus
MLS playoff teams: Real Salt Lake, Columbus, Seattle, Chicago, Toronto, Red Bull New York, Colorado, Los Angeles.

Houston

You know Houston is still a part of MLS right? No way Colorado makes the playoffs over Houston. Houston D is too good. They will draw 90% of their games until they get things rolling midseason (and perhaps after a midseason transfer).

BTW

See you at Pizza Hut Park on Sat. We are painting Frisco orange.

Sadly...

I will be there flying the FCD colors. Unfortunately, we will probably be washed out by orange clad fans. It’s so sad that we can’t muster more support for the home team than the visiting team can. Beaten on the field on your home park is one thing, but beaten in the stands? Sickening.

GeoJock-If I have to, I’ll do what I did in Houston a few summers back, which was try to start a riot with the Houston fans by sitting right next to them and walking past in my FCD colors. When the names started flying at me, I fired them right back. Almost got myself kicked out, but I wasn’t about to be intimidated by your lot. Nothing like a little hooligan element to liven it up, no?

Thats good stuff

Thats what MLS needs most. Strong regional rivalries.

I wont be one of the hooligan bunch cuz im meeting up with the whole family from all over Texas and unfortunately we have two FCD fans in our family.

Good luck. You might bring a banana in case some of the rowdies decide light up some orange smoke like last year.

And Steve...

Where do you put our fine home town club (FC Dallas who plays in Collin County) finishing the year? And if we’re not in the playoffs, how long will it take to get Shellas out of here?
