Two quotes I’m loving today
This from Freddie Ljungberg (via Joshua Mayers of The Seattle Times): Mayers writes about the ginormous expectations on the SigiSounders this year. Ljungberg knows a little something about pressure from his days at Arsenal, and he knows how best to deal with it. He says the key is creating a game-day routine and sticking with in, whether in a friendly or a massive playoff match. Seems to me there’s invaluable wisdom in that simple trick.
Ljungberg: “I don’t mess around, even if it’s against a bad opponent and we’re up 3-nil. I’ll do it proper, and hopefully I’ll get better.”
And this from hard-ass Philadelphia Union boss Peter Nowak (via Bob Ford of The Philadelphia Inquirer). Remember, Nowak is old school. Old school like MS-Dos. Ford talked to Nowak about players’ dedication to the craft.
Nowak: “YouTube highlights are not good enough for me. For me, you have to come to work every day like every other worker in the country. Then, the rest of the time, you have to think what you can do to make your game better.”
But he’s dealing with kids who weren’t exactly raised in Cold War
Nowak: “They do now. I know that it is not easy to train and play for me. I know that very well. They know it’s going to be hard, but sooner or later, these young men with great potential will realize that potential needs to be shown on the field. It’s good for a coach to have a team with potential, but potential will get you fired at some point.”
Two quick points. First, was there a better coaching fit for blue-collar Philly? And then this: Does anybody else wonder how this guy (Nowak) could possibly have had a problem working with little Freddy Adu?

lol
They did get alot of cards, huh? Inaugaraul game. 5 yellows, 1 red. We may not be the most skillful, but we sure as hell will be the nastiest.
I am just happy that we, Philly, finally have a MLS team. They came out of the gates like hellfire, but quickly cooled off. I seen a few things to like though. Mcinerney, made some good cuts for if the ball would have squeezed through. he’s young, so I see a lot of promise in this kid. Torres did pretty well too. I think these 2, if they stay with the club for a consitent time, can become an explosive duo. I also liked Le Toux. He’s fought hard, and I am always happy with that.
I seen a few things I wasn’t so thrilled about either. Califf seemed to just be another body. I was hoping for him to have a bigger impact. Still the first game so maybe as they get more accustomed he will fit that role better. I was not pleased with Myrie except for the football style tackle he employed…lol. Other then that, he looked way outclassed. Maybe it was just the Sounders good players, but if he keeps playing like he did, I wouldn’t be suprised to see him get benched.
I look forward to our next game and the return of Fred, and just want to reiterate how ecstatic I am that Philly’s got their own MLS team. Go Union!!!!!!!!!!!!

Torres!
That kid has something. I’m eager to see more. Mwanga? That was a lot to ask of the kid. New role, slick turf, daunting atmosphere … and then to stack up the obstacles by asking him to play a less familiar position? Hmmm. Like I said, that’s a tough ask of the kid. (And then pull him at halftime? Hmmm.)

Cards
I agree with the comments above. I actually laughed when I saw a yellow card drawn out 34 seconds into the game.
