MLS Cup 2010 goes to Toronto
MLS Cup in
Major League Soccer made it official today after commish Don Garber pretty much let the cat out of the bag last week:
Bad move, due to weather, you might say? Well, I seem to recall a pretty decent dog soaker going on in and around MLS Cup Sunday last year in
The commish noted during last week’s conference call that it was sunny and 55 (during the day) in
To see why I think it's a good choice, click forth ...
I say, potential dicey weather is worth another shot at a brilliant atmosphere, the kind we saw last year in the
For the record, I did once criticize MLS for putting MLS Cup in
At any rate, there IS a compelling reason to put the game in
Second,
Yeah, it might be cold. But one game in the cold is OK. The fans will bundle up. And the players will be o.k., so long as the temperatures don’t drop in ridiculous figures.
Rain and snow? That’s another matter. There is a chance of truly nasty stuff.
I suppose that’s why they’ll have orange soccer balls around – just in case.

toronto supports their team so well
Almost better then everyone else. They definitely should get this. Sides, the players can learn to nut up or shut up, they play in the snow in england, and football players play outside all the time. when it snows on a sunday during football season in my town they call it “Bear weather”, which is why I feel that one game of cold won’t hurt the soccer players too much

I was in Toronto a few weeks ago, and even though the MLS season hadn’t started yet, I was shocked at how much exposure TFC got around the city. Plus it’s really cool that BMO Field is one of the first things you see off the highway when you drive into Toronto.
I’m American, but I’m ecstatic about all these great new Canadian MLS sides.
"My face is my mask."
Big crowds of disinterested fans
Listen I loved being in Seattle, but it is so funny that everyone blew up how crazy and loud the fans were at Qwest field, but sitting on the pitch taking pictures both during the RSL opener and then at MLS Cup, I can tell you that they were two totally different things. At MLS Cup, Seattle fans gave a bigger cheer for a guy fixing a broken cable on the goal, than they did for almost anything else. Oh yes they did a couple minutes of their “Seattle….. Sounders” chant at the start of the match but I wasn’t overwhelmed after that.
Now let me tell you the real reason why I didn’t like how Seattle was handled, and what I hope they fix in Toronto. I was in a car for 12 hours getting to Seattle, as were many hundreds of other Real Salt Lake fans who came out to actually support a team playing in the match. The options given to them for tickets was buy them from Sounders fans at inflated prices, or sit in the 300 level of a NFL stadium and watch a match you couldn’t really see. Now few people complained because it was a Championship and we won, but I was in the 300 level during warmups and I can tell you that I couldn’t tell the players apart.
So will MLS allow Toronto to give away every seat in the house to their season ticket holders and leave fans of the teams playing in the match to sit out in the cold, or pay “jacked up” prices? Or will they work with Toronto and say, we need at least one section for each team that will be playing in the match? Then offer those tickets to the teams that will actually be playing in the match? If they haven’t sold them all 48 hours before the match, then sell them to the general public.
It will be interesting to see what happens if you end up with a stadium of great fans who are watching a match that they simply don’t really care about or not.
The ticket situation
was tough, because 90% of the seats were held by season ticketholders. There wasn’t much else to work with aside from opening up the upper deck.

top seed, do it already
The game should go to the top seed, makes the regular season mean even more, most locations (once KC and SJ come on) will be able to handle it, passionate fans, atmosphere,
Went to the 2007 MLS Cup at RFK and sang 99 bottles of beer on the wall, chanted DCU chants along with “You guys are Boring” chants…
Agree
I think making the regular season count more would be a great thing, If it is good enough for the first two rounds, it is good enough for the Championship.
It also rewards the fans of the top rated team, but no matter where the match is held there must be good seats for the teams playing in the match. Why punish the fans of the teams playing for the Championship?
In the Crew section of the Columbus Dispatch yesterday, there was a similar headline. I literally did a double take and thought “well that was a fast season”
Columbus til I die, Columbus til I die. I know I am, I swear I am, Columbus til I die!
