World Cup South Africa; things I learned while writing a preview
I’ve been working furiously on team previews and other goodies for a World Cup preview magazine. (One that should be at your local news stand soon, presuming I can step away from my work here and here and here and at this little blog long enough to finish up all the related content.)
Here are five important things I’ve taken away while navigating the rivers, forests and sands of global research:
1.

2. The Dutch will be so infuriatingly Dutch once again. I hate to say that. Just like so many soccer fans, I appreciate the Dutch approach and always want them to do well for the game’s sake. Alas, I don’t see it happening, in spite of a qualification campaign unrivaled in its dominance.
Why? Wesley Sneijder. I didn’t realize until I started poking around how much a divisive figure he really was. I wasn’t aware of the feuding between he and Arjen Robben, who seems a bit like a prima donna himself. I could be wrong, of course. It has happened before. Heck, just look at my predictions in MLS last weekend.
Side note: I have written 24 team previews. (Someone else wrote the other eight). If I have to write the words “qualification campaign” just once more, I swear I’ll be so upset that I’ll lose my ability to punctuate properly.

My prediction for the USA...
Round of 16 exit. Enough to get through Slovenia 1-0 and Algeria 3-1. If they can get a point off of England, just a bonus. Even if they do though, England will go thru tops on goal difference. US will then get a big fish and get fried.

I would say that you can remember how to seperate them by saying you should note the one with the V was formerly part of a cobbled together Eastern Bloc Republic, but I don’t think that actually helps…

… if that makes me laugh or cry. maybe a little of both. fact remains, its GONNA happen
I've been to both countries
And still made the same mistake. They have similar flags, too, only with a slightly different logo in a slightly different location on the flag. And I think they’re even closer to each other in their native tongues (which are themselves related).

Sadly I agree...
with your USA prediction. I hope I am wrong, but I see a three-and-out with an 0-2-1 record. I’m just not confident enough in our central MF to believe that we’ll generate enough goal-scoring opportunities…or convert the ones we do generate. Our fate lies in the hands of Mike B and whoever partners him to dictate the game. I’m trying to remember the last time I saw that happen against quality (vs non-Mexico CONCACAF) opposition – and I can’t. Wow I hope I’m wrong.
Ahhh
I hate all of the pesimism but I can’t help but be worried that you’re all right. I know that we have the talent to advance out of this group but it’s hard for me to have the confidence to say that we actually will. When I think about what will happen, a disappointment after an amazing Confed Cup last summer seems more likely than a Round of 16 birth.
My key player is Jozy Altidore, probably because he’s one of my favorites. But if he can bring his game to the next level that many are waiting for and provide an attacking presense and goal-scoring threat then it will be what the U.S needs to get out of the group. I think Landon and Dempsey will be there regardless, we need a 3rd scoring threat to step up.
All I ask is for that, a 4th match on the 3rd weekend is all I want and I will remember this World Cup with satisfaction.
Love the World Cup stuff Steve, keep it coming. Oh and I will be buying your preview for sure.

My Bold USA Prediction...
We stun England in the opener, I’m thinking 2-0 or 2-1. Then, in our overconfident air, we lose to Slovenia (or Slovakia) and Algeria both, thus missing out on 2nd round honors. Bob Bradley is then unceremoniously shown the door before July 4. Which is unfortunate because no coaching is great enough to overcome injuries and a lack of depth.

US Defense
Stevie Ray
I’m wondering if you are on to something with your U.S. prediction. Ironically, I feel like the concerns around the U.S. have historically centered around its ability to mount an attack. For me, I’m actually not that worried about that. Our counter will be good and I think there is enough quality in the midfield to hold it together (see Donovan, Bradley, and Dempsey). Additionally, Jozy Altidore is quite good at holding up the ball and will draw some fouls so I think you will see plenty of chances off of set pieces. That being said, I’m worried about the defense. I’m worried that Bradley will once again be tempted to think that Jonathan Bornstein can be the answer (after getting torched so many times in International play). I’m worried that Bradley will have to play Onyewu (if he is healthy) but will he truly be game fit? Onyewu already has a knack for key fouls and he just looks guilty most of the time. If there is a chance he will be a second slow, that makes for a bad combination. The margin of error for the U.S. is usually very small, and one defensive mistake could be all it takes. It could easily be the difference between 3 pts in the group and 4 points (which hopefully could get them through)

Nice post Steve!
1. Slovenia play the most joyless brand of football since Greece bored their way to the European Cup. Bewaaaaaaare!
2. For such a laid-back nation the Dutch are repeatedly the most mardy bunch of folks you could ever find dressed in matching clothing. It’s crazy, they really do only have themselves to blame for almost never winning a competition.
3. I still think the US have enough talent to get out of the round. After that it’s anyone’s guess (until you meet Spain or Brazil).
4. I live considerably closer than you to both countries. I know where they both are, I just can’t remember which is which. :-)
5. I think Paraguay will get out of their group but not much further despite being no push-overs at all. Dark horses? Hmmmm, I think Ghana are no mugs…
I sometimes wonder...
…if this pesimism is because of the fact we have many “X” factors or that Jonathan Bornstein is going to get a call-up.
Somebody forgot to pick-up the trailer.
