Quick reaction: U.S. World Cup team preliminary roster
We still don’t have a complete picture of who will be on the final 23-man roster for
Start with Charlie Davies, who was always facing tremendously long odds in his recovery bid. I wrote long ago that Davies was simply asking too much of his body. It's one thing to recover from the automobile accident related injuries to a place where he could perform daily, mundane human chores. But getting to a place where he was fit enough and strong enough to play soccer at the highest level, in such a demanding tournament, was simply never going to happen.
So, Bradley made it official on Tuesday when he announced the preliminary list of 30 -- no Davies.
(Remember, the 23-man roster must come from this list; the final selections are due into FIFA on June 1.)
Credit Davies for fighting back to a point where Bradley, apparently, needed to make an 11th hour choice.
Said Bradley of the Davies situation: "That’s been incredibly difficult. Charlie has shown so much heart in this, in his work to get back from his injuries. We've monitored his workouts, we have had people there (at Sochaux in
Also significant Tuesday: no Freddy Adu. It's no big surprise to everyone following the program over the last couple of years. (Although late rumors surfaced that Adu would be in the camp. Well, rumor-schumor.) It will be a head-scratcher for two sets: the "casual sports fan" who will ask their soccer friends, "Hey, I thought Freddy Adu was, like, the next Pele or whatever?" And it will rile the risk-takers among U.S. Soccer supporters. You know the kind. They like to say things like, "Why doesn't he try this?" or "Well, he should give so-and-so a try."
I've said it before and I'll say it again. It's easy for fans to throw that crap out there because they don't have to answer to anyone (including those guys inside the locker room) when things go sideways. One coach after another has struggled to manage Freddy Adu. Bradley didn't want to be next on the list, especially when Adu has failed to clearly demonstrate that he can make a difference at this level.
Meanwhile, Alejandro Bedoya, a Miami native playing in Sweden that 99.8 percent of all U.S. Soccer fans had never heard of before he popped up in January's national team camp in California, has a place. Freddy … geez, man … if this isn’t the wake up call you so desperately need, then what will be?
All 30 players are not necessarily reporting to the training camp next week in
Finally, the question that just won’t go away is really no closer to, well, going away: who will play forward on this team. Bradley essentially eliminated Conor Casey and Jeff Cunningham, which should come as no surprise considering their flagging from in MLS of late. Still, look for at least two of the six named on Tuesday to fall off the list, and possible even three.
GOALKEEPERS (3): Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton), Marcus Hahnemann (
DEFENDERS (9): Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover), Jay DeMerit (Watford), Clarence Goodson (IK Start), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew), Oguchi Onyewu (AC Milan), Heath Pearce (FC Dallas), Jonathan Spector (West Ham United)

The second forward.
I’d love Dempsey on the front line ,it seams to me that’s where he plays best on this team. But more importantly, who gets the #9 Jersey? Buddle? Eddie Johnson?
Why not Jozy?
I think he and Clint would play well together

Thats what I'm sayin.
It worked well against Spain last summer. And We wouldn’t even be playing against Spain if Clint didn’t move up top against Egypt.
Who your 7 to be left behind?
I would leave behind Findley, Buddle, Rogers, Kljestan, Pearce, Marshall, Bornstein. With Johnson and Beaseley on the bubble.
So leave both natural LB’s at home? Thats sorta silly; no?
Cut Findley, Johnson, Rogers, Kljestan, Bedoya, Marshall, Bornstein and you’ve got a better team. Especially since Bocanegra can move out wide in the time of need.
Somebody forgot to pick-up the trailer.
Good point.
Guess you have to take either Pearce or Bornstein for the reason you mentioned plus i would think you need at 7 defenders althouth Edu can play back there in a pinch
I take Pearce. Bornstein gets a more negativity than he deserves but he always seems to be in the middle of trouble. Plus
No reason to cry over Adu
Although personally I think he could’ve been chosen over Rogers, but what do I know. And besides, Adu’s only 20(soon to be 21) and could easily improve enough to play in 2014.
Insanity is just a state of mind.
process of elimination...
The way I see it, what we are most likely to see in June is a 4-2-3-1 style, maybe even trending towards a 4-3-3 style, because of Donovan and Demspey, who are our best players and are at their best in that attacking mid/withdrawan striker band. What this means is that, with these two providing the impetus to much of the attack, with help from Bradley in a holding mid/deep-lying playmaker role, we are likely to not see very many of these players listed as “forward” seeing the pitch in June. Even in a 4-3-3 I see D & D as the playmaking wings, with a “target man” in the middle, with maybe Holden as a CAM in front of Bradley and Clark…
So, I only see room for three forwards, and I’m pretty sure Altidore is going, and I think Buddle deserves the nod — you really ought to find a place in your 23-man roster for someone on great form heading into the tournament — which means I only see one of the other 4 making it…
We already know Bradley, Donovan, Demspey are lead pipe locks to be in the starting 11, Clark almost certainly will be as a holding mid, and I have a pretty strong suspicion that Feilhaber and Holden are pretty sure bets as well. Edu adds more depth in the holding midfield, and can be an emergency center back. If it is, indeed, more of a 4-2-3-1 style which Bradley intends to employ, one of the band of three attacking mid/withdrawan striker roles is wide open (D & D being clearly the other two) which certainly could be filled by one of the above, but I think also opens a door for Beasely. It is also of note that Bedoya – who, lets face it, none of us know much about – has been a mainstay at left mid for his team in Sweden, and this seems to be the spot that is open, and Rogers plays as a true winger so he’s in the equation. Klejstan is probably a reserve right mid, and Torres a reserve CAM, and there may not be room for them…
Defender seems to come down to 6 guys I see as sure things: Bocanegra as either a left or center, Gooch and DeMerit as CB’s, Spector and Cherundolo as RB’s, and Bornstein as an LB. Marshall, Goodson, and Pearce are all reserves, and since I simply can’t see taking more than 7 defenders, whether it’s Pearce (a LB), or one of the other two (both CB’s), as the 7th guy will say a lot about where Bradley intends to use Bocanegra…
so, lets review the spots up for grabs:
3 GK’s : locked up
3 forwards: Altidore and Buddle, plus one of Ching, Gomez, Findley, or Johnson
10 mids: Donovan, Dempsey (keeping in mind that these two are forwards as much as mids), Bradley, Clark, Felihaber, Holden, plus one or two of Beasely, Bedoya, or Rogers; probably Edu, maybe Klejstan and/or Torres…
7 defenders: Bocanegra, Bornstein, Onweyu, DeMerit, Cherundolo, Spector, plus one of Pearce, Goodson, Marshall
What this all says is we will go as far as the creative prowess of Dempsey and Donovan can take us… and lets all keep in mind that we can lose 4-0 to England, but by squeaking out wins over Algeria and Slovenia, we will will surely advance out of the group stage, which, I think, is everyone’s goal…
...that's MISTER Keller to you!!!
