Most indispensable U.S. man – Donovan? Howard? Someone else?

Landon Donovan ... the most essential U.S. man.

In the wake of Michael Ballack’s sad injury misfortune, I’m proposing a thinky question to kick-start the brain matter on a Monday morning.

(If you missed it, the German captain injured ankle ligaments in Saturday’s FA Cup final. He is the one indispensable player for Germany, the one figure who simply cannot be replaced, both for his leadership and ability.)

So, as the U.S. starts training camp today, ask yourself: what would be the greatest injury setback to the United States cause? There are three friendlies before England and America do battle in Rustenburg; Who is the one absolutely essential player, the one man the United States simply cannot afford to see crumple in the run-up?

Hint: If you get too far past Landon Donovan, Tim Howard or maybe Clint Dempsey, then go back four spaces on the big board – and lose a turn.

I would assign the order like this:

1. Landon Donovan

2. Tim Howard

3. Clint Dempsey

(Honorable mention goes to Michael Bradley and Carlos Bocanegra, in that order.)

Star-divide

No one was more influential in qualifying than Donovan, the country’s all-time leading scorer. He always seemed to supply a goal or an assist when his country needed it most. Donovan’s highly successful 10-week loan spell at Everton – before he returned to Major League Soccer and the Los Angeles Galaxy in March – and the fast start on the MLS track has him brimming with confidence. He scores. He sets up others. He’s terrific on restarts. Bottom line: they just cannot afford to lose him.

Howard has more than just ability to change games through big saves. He’s reached a career point where he’s also unimpeachably dependable on all the little stuff, and he’s a locker room presence. His backup, Marcus Hahnemann, is capable but doesn’t inspire the same confidence.

Dempsey’s "indispensability" factor is also attached to his ability as a difference maker. He can labor through a quiet evening – only to change the game in an instant with a goal. He can make something out of nothing, an ability so few U.S. players truly possess.

I know the mention of Bradley on this list will get some people in a twist. But he does hold the midfield together pretty well, and he’s the best two-way player on the roster.

Not much to argue with here.

I’d put Dempsy ahead of Howard though, only because of the quality of depth at goalkeeper vs attacking players.

Los Angeles is like Manchester. There is a red team that wins championships and a blue team that doesn't.

Donovan, very very closely followed by Dempsey, with Howard a distant third

Hahnemann and Guzan can make things happen if need be. Donovan and Dempsey are absolutely irreplaceable

Donovan no question

I’d through Dempsey, Howard, and Onyewu into a tie for #2.

That said, I think Bradley is the key to the US having a great tournament. If he really steps up and plays at the top of his game, he could be a difference maker for the team. If he’s only average, I have a hard time seeing the US surprising anyone.

Not mediocre. Right about average

Nice topic

Definitely Donovan. He creates so much and it always seem as if he sees the game 2 or 3 passes ahead of time which I can’t quite say for many of our players. I especially saw this in his time at Everton where he was playing with much more talented players.

That being said, I think Dempsey COULD be more important if he brings it every game and is given the chance to play up top.

I would move Jozy ahead of both Bradley and Boca

mainly because of the dearth of forwards on the team. He’s still not going to carry the team, but if Boca or Bradley miss, there’s another international quality player behind them. The replacement won’t be nearly as good or bring the leadership that they bring, but they’re international quality. The forwards behind Jozy…I’m not so sure and while both Landon and Dempsey can play up top, neither can do it alone.

Donovan, then Altidore.

I say LD too

Then Gooch, mainly because him missing out would likely mean Boca slides in and Bornstein starts at left back. The only position I’d play Bornstein at is Left Out. ZING

Then Altidore, Dempsey, and Bradley in that order. Any of our top 3 keepers would start for England, so while Howard is the clear #1 I don’t think we’d miss him too much.

I’d have to say Howard, because i have little confidence in our back line. I think as timmy goes this team will go, and while the two backups are serviceable, i think any chance we have of making much noise will depend on Howard standing on his head. After him i’d have to say a tie for LD and Dempsey, LD because he is our most talented player, and Dempsey because of the aforementioned ability to snatch goals in huge moments.

+1 but

I think we’re both GKs at heart… I do think that attacking depth is awful though, and I’d bump Jozy to #4 as discussed above
