Talking South Africa, staging areas, security alerts and tasers

Photo

Well, looky here! Dig, if you will, this picture. It's everything I packed for the 2006 World Cup trip to Germany. Clothes and everything -- they're just a bit hard to see, up top but below the gnome.

And no, silly, the gnome didn't roam. He remained home, like a good little gnome – I just thought it was something funny to stick in the picture.

Any-who, gnomes and Dr. Seuss rhymes aside, I’ve got to begin putting together my staging area for South Africa this weekend. I do so love the staging area. Let’s see, how am I going to pack that taser … ? (Sounds like your intrepid journalist here will damn sure need it.)

Listen I hope and pray that there are no major issues during the World Cup, now or in 4 years when we again enter a country with extreme poverty, crime, and questionable security. I know several people who have traveled to South Africa in the last 24 months and none had an issue, but at the same time I know 3 people who went for the Confed Cup, and each had a run in with crime, two had their rooms broken into, and one was the victim of a potential mugging.

There will be SA police, and Army everywhere but I still expect there to be some huge issues as a lot of people with bad intentions see this as a golden opportunity.

Finally got around to a Barnes & Noble and bought your World Cup preview mag, Steve. Great stuff.
