Vuvuzelas? I say: Power to the people!

It's a horn, folks. It's not mace.

JOHANNESBURG Some of the rancor has died down over this relentless attack of the vuvuzelas. But there’s still some of it out there. I mean, geeze, they’re horns, not poisonous shooting darts.

Sometimes I think we’ve all just become a world of big ol’ wussies. I like to call it the flat screen effect.

Life is pretty good for most people in developed worlds. But we’re not so far removed from much tougher times. It really wasn’t so long ago that no one had air conditioning. And yet humanity survived. Now we’re not happy if the damn flat screen doesn’t adjust to the light in the room.

So, here’s what I have to say to all the killjoys who keep lamenting the vuvuzelas: get over it.

I’ve been to the stadiums here. It’s white noise. You really do forget about it quickly.

In a lot of ways, this is South Africa’s World Cup. If the people of this still-developing land want to blow horns in joy, let ‘em!  It’s part of the culture. In some ways, it’s part of the landscape, part of the environment, like altitude or temperature. How about if the United States hosted a major international basketball tournament and folks from around the world started belly-aching about music, dancers of maniacally screaming PA announcers during timeouts? We’d tell all to deal with it or go home.

And, puh-leeze, don’t tell me about it affecting the game. Every player I’ve heard from here, including plenty of the Americans and even Holland prima donna Wesley Sneijder, say about the same thing: once you’re in the match, you don’t hear them.

That is all. I will now officially switch to decaffeinated while awaiting the U.S. - Slovenia kickoff. Good day, all.

Heart-stopping singing

is far more part of SA’s culture. Shame we’ve heard so little of it, really.

I completely agree. Maybe it’s a little annoying, but let people do what they want.

I agree too, although Dennis Miller had a great line that the world cup seems like a constant Ricola commercial.

First off, it’s not South Africa’s World Cup, it’s the Worlds. SA is the host, and if you host a dinner party you go out of your way to make it pleasant for your guests, not torment them endlessly.

That said, what bothers me the most about the horns isn’t the noise itself, like others have mentioned you tune it out pretty quickly. The problem is it takes away from the organic noise of the crowds. You don’t get to hear the joy of a teams supporters, don’t get to hear them singing on their country, etc. You just get this constant buzzing, which is indifferent to the action on the field.

I love them

When I get older, I will be stronger.
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag

We were robbed today.

I am so sad. My 9-yr old son said, “That’s not right dad, why did the referee do that?”

“Because mean people suck son.”

bbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrzzzzzzzzzzz.....

Dallas Burn had them for years at the Cotton Bowl…I got used to it there, and I just consider it a normal background noise for soccer. In fact, I’m much more tired of all the whining noises about the buzzing noises than I am about the buzzing noises.
