A very early look at possible 2014 starters for the US

Yeah it's really early but I feel like we have a good mix of young and old so I was just thinking of who will start and blah blah you don't care about my life story so heres the lineup.. But I am changing the formation from 2010, Im going to show us with a 3-4-3

Keeper: Tim Howard - Okay, this was really obvious. Moving on

Centre backs: Onyewu, Omar Gonzalez , Agbossoumonde - I think Gooch will be good to go in the next WC even though he is going to be in his early 30's. We will need someone tough and experienced sort of how Boco was for us in 2010, Omar was the 09' ROY and deserves a spot on the team. He and Agbo will be a very young and promising back line and given plenty of experience and no injuries I think in 4 years our back line will be much more secure

Mids: Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, Maurice Edu, Michael Bradley - No change from 2010. Clint relies heavily on ball handling skills which may only get better over time and he won't lose much strength. LD will be fine as well although he won't be as quick he will still be as good if not a better passer in 4 years time. Bradley and Edu form a ncie defensive centre mid combo and both are still young.

Forwards: Jozy, Mwanga, Buddle - It was a travesty Buddle didn't start in 2010 but he will get his shot. As a player who relies not on speed but skill he will not lse much and he has only gotten better with age. Jozy will be entering his prime and Mwanga will be blossoming into a star. He has said he wants to play for the US so it looks like we will have him (sorry congo).

So that was me rambling away at our team 4 years from now. Some subs should be Charlie Davies and Felihaber especially. Luis Gil and Spector as well. As for backup GK maybe Seitz and bare with me... But I think Adu finally pulls it together. I dont know how but I think he becomes a nice role player for us

Interesting ideas, but in my opinion

given the shaky nature of the US back line, I don’t see any way that they would go with three defenders. They scare me with four, with three I think it could get pretty ugly. I also hope a new crop of defenders really steps up in the next four years, I think it is the US’s real weak point. Onyewu has all the looks of a good tough center back, but really lacks a lot of the skill, he is average to below average in my opinion.

Landon and Clint will get roster spots until the wheels literally fall off their respective wagons. Bradley is a lock in the middle and will soon be the US’s best player, the guy is solid and patient, he doesn’t get frazzled the way some of the other guys do. Instead of Edu, I would rather see Feilhaber pair with Bradley though, I think with four defenders they could add a more creative offensive midfielder. Benny was a spark every moment he played in South Africa.

Up top I would like to see Altidore and Davies continue to progress and be much better players in four years, I’m looking at you Jozy. The problem with Buddle is that much of international soccer is about speed and you just can’t sacrifice it at this level.

Holdin is my wildcard, I think he could end up being a presence on future US teams.

And yes, Howard is a lock.

Danny will be better than Charlie

I can guarantee it, also I tihnk Edu brings a more defensive style of play than Benny which is needed

This is my sig, what do I do with it?

hold on...

edu is an ok player, but he is the same type of player as bradley, and not nearly as good, they both do the same things on the field. And we NEED a holding mid. which edu has shown he is not. Its does the team no good to have two solid defending CM, who lack vision to get the ball up the field to the forwards. and how can you “guarantee” that danny will be better than charlie??? did you not watch qualifying at all? charlie did some big things

I think there are some key players missing

At defense I think we’ll finally see Spector step up to the starting role at outside back. Also hopefully by 2014 Chad Marshall or Heath Pearce will have secured a move away from the MLS and to a top league and can take over CB duties, probably over Omar Gonzalez. Also Bornstein has to be thrown in here although I can’t possibly hope for him at outside back, because he likes to give me heart attacks.

At midfield, I enjoy hoping against hope that Freddy Adu can get his act together and make an impact on the world stage, but for realists (especially in the 4-5-1 that Bradley sometimes favors) Jose Francisco Torres will hopefully be making a splash and a combination of Stu Holden/Sacha Kljestan will be playing some midfield. Also, Jermaine Jones should be back from injury and hopefully getting some time at holding midfielder over Edu.

Forward has always been a wildcard position for the US team (at least since McBride retired). Altidore will most likely keep going, but the second striker options are the interesting ones. Davies really looks to be the second striker especially if he can get his pace back. He was a constant threat in qualifying and would’ve brought a whole new element to the US if he was in the World Cup. I’m still waiting for that breakout US striker who comes in to score goals on a regular basis. Hopefully Altidore or someone else will step up to take that role.

To recap the lineup will hopefully look like this: Howard, Spector, Onyewu, Marshall/Pearce, Bornstein (shudder), Dempsey, Jones, Bradley, Donovan, Davies, Altidore. Key bench players: Marshall/Pearce, Holden, Kljestan, Torres, et. al.

Since the WC is still 4 years away,

I have at least 3 years to be a dreamer. That being said, you left Luis Gil off the team, and he’s a lock to score like 50 goals with like 100 assists. Also, Rossi breaks the rules and returns to the American squad, and Messi realizes he grew up in the United States.

In all seriousness though, I wanna see Davies in 2014.

Keep in mind, of course, that "the best defense of Derek Jeter's life" ranks somewhere in between "the best fiscal responsibility of Mike Tyson's life" and "the best not-getting-assassinated-ness of James Garfield's life." -FJM

I think Davies will be on the team

I just didn’t list him as a starter
