This and that on the U.S. Soccer scene

Was Clint Mathis' retirement a move the Galaxy needed to make to create some roster and salary cap space?

Scribbling and scattershooting while wondering whatever happened to Doctor Khumalo ...

Let’s see. L.A. Galaxy veteran attacker Clint Mathis retires, somewhat suddenly. L.A galaxy striker Alan Gordon is traded across the hallway to Chivas USA. The summer transfer window remains open. The Galaxy has another Designated Player slot still available. Anyone else smell an impending announcement?

Chad Marshall turned down a chance to play for Bob Bradley’s national team? Against Brazil? Hmmm. He says he just wants to exploit a break in the schedule and use the time to squeeze in some extra rest. While admirable, I can’t help but wonder if there’s more to that story.

The lack of self-awareness around D.C. United is mind-boggling. They still seem to live in 1999 around there. Kevin Payne keeps banging on about what it means to wear the D.C. United shirt. I’ll tell you what it means: it means you’ll miss the playoffs five times in 10 years when you miss them this year. In MLS! That’s absurd. Read more about it here on my piece at SI.com.

I like my stadium porn as much as the next guy. Nothing jingles my keys like the next innovative plan for the next great U.S. soccer venue. But, man, this one sounds a little out there for me.

Star-divide

Every week I watch every MLS match. Sometimes when overly chatty announcers (who need to pay more attention to the game) or when overly lenient referees (who are afraid to call fouls and can’t properly control matches) aren't driving me crazy as an outhouse rat, the pissy poor quality of crosses in this league is. You can read more about that last one in my weekly column on tactics in MLS.

If you missed the ESPN2 weekly offer (Columbus went into Philly and came out a winner) you missed Taylor Twellman’s debut as an analyst. Verdict: Not bad at all. Well, unless you’re Steven Lenhart’s mom, and you got a wee bit upset over Twellman finding a “long I” vowel sound in your son’s name. Twellman seemed comfortable. He had opinion and insight. I only hope that he continues to think like a player instead of like an announcer, if you know what I mean. Otherwise he could fall into the broadcast cliché traps. Or even better, maybe he’ll heel up and we could see him back in the league next year.

For anyone wondering, group play in the CONCACAF Champions League begins Aug. 17. For those wondering,Real Salt LakeTorontoSeattle and Columbus have qualified to represent MLS. Puerto Rico is the lone rep from U.S. Soccer’s second division. The schedule is here.

I poked around a little while at FC Dallas-Inter Milan last night and found out why, for the love of all that’s good, FCD will begin a match Sunday at 5 p.m.  If you’re not familiar, it’s brutal in Texas in August. Starting matches anytime before 7:30 p.m. (or even better, 8 p.m. as yesterday against the European champions) is a really bad idea. It kills the game. It kills the opportunity to draw any kind of a crowd. But Fox Soccer Channel asked, the league said OK and nobody around FCD stood up and said “NO! We’re not doing that to our fans!”

I met new GM Doug Quinn last night. I have a feeling that FC Dallas won’t be playing any 5 p.m. games in August next year; I think he’ll be on top of such things.  FYI: He was doing at least one thing that has been sorely missing around Pizza Hut Park. He had a notepad with him, jotting down all the little customer service foibles that have lingered far too long at PHP. He says he already knows which taps ran out of beer and where the longest concession lines were and such. Good on him.

He told me FC Dallas is getting close to selling out the upcoming game against the Red Bulls, and he also hopes to sell out the regular season closer. If he can stamp out some of those stadium issues (like playing peppy music after the opposition scores, as game producers did last night … what’s up with that?) then FCD Dallas will be on their way to making more repeat customers out of the supporters who help fill up the stands on those evenings.

I think the Detroit move could be huge

I’m not sure if it’s feasible but if they built it, I would go. 5 hours from Toronto, 5 hours from Chicago and 4 hours from Columbus, that’s a good mix of cities for rivals. It’s also not TERRIBLE for Boston, New York, D.C., and Philly to make the trek either.

I’ve been rooting for St. Louis but I don’t think they have the ownership group to get it done and they only really add good road trips for KC and Chicago. I would love to see this happen in Detroit.

North Carolina needs a %$#@$%@# team, and should be next for an MLS team

The state’s too good at soccer (and way, way too many people care about it here) to not have an MLS team somewhere around here. Soccer’s too big in the south to lack MLS teams like they do.

Nobody steps up

I agree there should be a team in the Southeast, but without anyone to actually step up and put a plan and money behind the desire, it won’t happen. Look at the hype last year about a Barca backed team in Miami last year, everyone thought it was a done deal, until it came time to write a check.

That's true. Barca should have know n better about Miami- awful, awful sports town

There’s literally millions of dollars invested into soccer and its infrastructure in North Carolina (from the youngest ages to College). There are multiple top flight club teams (the only state I know of where club is better than ODP), and a very high number of Division one college teams (men’s, women’s goes without saying). It’s strange to me no one has stepped up, because the state as a whole has made a long term commitment in terms of infrastructure and development to the sport on every level except the professional.

My take...

First please excuse any bias as I am a huge Crew fan…

Marshall has had a nagging knee injury all year. He missed a couple games early on and he’s played through a lot. Along with the MLS season, the Crew are involved in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, and the CCL coming up. Chad is going to have a lot of playing time to fill and a friendly for the US squad isn’t really top priority. Obviously I can’t speak for him but he’s thinking club first.

As far as Twellman as an announcer goes, eh. I thought he was alright at moments, and sometimes just brutal to listen to. I like the idea of former players (not necessarily in his case…yet) as announcers because they have that other perspective, knowledge and experience to make listening to the game worth it.

And I have no idea where he got “Linehart” out of “Lenhart.” Thats just mind boggling. However, if Steven can score consistently like he has the last 2 games, call him whatever the hell you want.

Columbus til I die, Columbus til I die. I know I am, I swear I am, Columbus til I die!

Thanks again, and about that music....

It was nice bumping into you last night, please forgive me for interrupting your conversation with Andy. Always look forward to my Daily fix.

Regarding the music, I asked about that some time ago at a SuperLiga match, and was told they would do it for all “friendlies” as a way of encouraging the other team and fans to come back. Irked the hell out of me then, irked me a bit last night. Maybe Mr. Quinn can put that on his list as well.

agree

the only music at a soccer game should be loud singing and drumming

RSL crosses

RSL sees its fair share of poor crosses. I’m thinking of Chris Wingert, here. I can’t remember a single productive cross he’s ever made.

Robbie Russel, on the other hand (or side of the field), delivers 1 or 2 very well-placed crosses every game. Watch for him. http://www.mlssoccer.com/videos?catid=1916&id=4229

PHP customer service issues

glad to hear the new guy seems to be starting with the game day experience. its an important move to keep the fans you already have happy and we’ve been dealing with those little annoyance for too long when they would have (and hopefully will be) easy to fix.

Detroit

Being from Detroit, I’ve wanted the city to have an MLS team since the league began. I know Detroit is probably the butt of a lot of jokes as of late, due to its current situation, but its still a great sports town and Michigan has a lot of love for the sport. While I wouldn’t bet all my money on this Silverdome project bringing an MLS team to Michigan, I am willing to put all my faith in the first major push for that to happen.

So, hopefully sometime in the next 10 years, I can finally have a true home team to root for!

DC United

What is happening there is sad and frustrating. Your idea of hiring Bob Bradley to get them on track again is a good one, and the reasoning is sound. It should be noted that DCU achieved most of their success under two coaches with very strong personalities in Bruce Arena and later Peter Nowak.
