Where is your coach on the list?

New York Red Bulls manager Hans Backe ... getting it done at a place where so many others simply could not.

In my weekly MLS Monday wrap-up piece on SI.com, I sometimes zig rather than zag on the Power Rankings. Instead of ranking the teams each week, I might rank the league’s top rookies, or top goalkeepers, etc.  This week, we point the poison pen on the coaches.

The piece should be posted soon(Update: Here's the link.) For now, here are the top 5 coaches as a quick teaser. The list itself will provide further explanation for each one.

Remember, this list is based on performance in 2010. So keep that in mind when you spank me in the comments for not having Sigi Schmid or Steve Nicol, both high accomplished coaches, higher on the list. (Yes, I’m speaking to you, members of the SB Nation Seattle mafia!)

1. Hans Backe

2. Schellas Hyndman

3. Jason Kreis

4. Bruce Arena

5. Gary Smith

A couple of people you won’t see on the list when it’s posted (it’s a Top 10): Dominic Kinnear and Preki. Read on for more on this ... and other explainers regarding the list ...

Star-divide

Earlier this year I was talking up Preki, whom I always believed was squeezing a lot of juice from a lemon at Chivas USA. His teams, I thought, were always more than the sum of their parts, mostly because they worked so hard and didn’t beat themselves with silly mistakes.

I thought he would bring the same to Toronto and said so in pre-season previews. DuNord’s Bruce McGuire took me behind the woodshed and gave me a right-proper pummeling for this. (Not really … he just sent me a nice note of disagreement.) First it looked like he was right, then for about three months it looked like I was right, as TFC got it together and put itself in dandy playoff positioning.

Now … Well, I’m about ready to make a concession speech on this one. TFC has faded, and I see them struggling to make the playoffs. You’ll read more about that in my SI.com piece, too.

Kinnear didn’t stop being a good coach this year. He just doesn’t have the horses at Robertson Stadium. I could go position-by-position and show you why the Dynamo is faring so poorly this year. At pretty much every spot, the team just isn’t as strong as it was two years ago, or even one year ago. Kinnear couldn’t keep Stuart Holden or Ricardo Clark from going to Europe, of course, so it’s not all his fault. Nor could he keep Geoff Cameron from being injured. So, again, Kinnear isn’t suddenly a bad coach.

Still, at some point, the coach is responsible for planning for these events. My guess, Kinnear and his Orange will be fine; they just aren’t going to pop up on many Top 10 lists for now.

As for Schmid and his appearance at No. 9 on the list: He’s doing OK this year, and the choice to finally cut bait with Freddie Ljungberg speaks well of him. On the other hand, it’s hard to gloss over a couple of choices made around Qwest, like the decision to leave Sebastien Le Toux unprotected 10 months ago. That man is a freakin’ machine for Philadelphia this year. You can read more about Le Toux’s special season in today’s piece at SI.com as well.

Why protect a 1 goal attacking player

who costs over 100K$?

he wouldn’t have been a starter if he had stayed in Seattle, well until Jaqua got hurt (which was after the Expansion Draft).

He scored 24 goals in 54 games for Seattle in USL

the two years before that. He also co-led USL in scoring and won the USL MVP award. And he’s 26 and in his prime.

It’s not just a terrible decision with the benefit of hindsight – it was a terrible decision from the minute it was made.

I'd say that, while Seba clearly is a good player

he wouldn’t have put up those kind of numbers in Seattle this season. His great #s are predicated on him being the main option on offense for Philly. There is simply no way he’d be a major option over any of the attacking players this season, and with Montero really being the central force in Seattle’s offense, I think Seba would have had similar #s to last season’s had he stayed. So, while it kinda sucks to see a guy the Sounders released do so well, I also think it was probably a better move for both sides overall, so I can’t be too upset about it.

USOC Stats

Didn’t Le Toux also score 3 goals and have 4 assists in USOC games? Leaving his final 2009 numbers at 4 goals and 7 assists?

I know Le Toux quite well

Having covered and seen him at all of his US levels.

He wouldn’t be starting over Zakuani, Ljungberg, Montero or Jaqua nor Nkufo, nor Fernandez. He was an extra part that was over-priced.

I mean, its not like I’m not a Sounders fan/blogger

What about some of the other guys you protected though

Alonso, Osvaldo
Evans, Brad
Gonzalez, Leo
Hurtado, Jhon Kennedy
Ianni, Patrick
Jaqua, Nate
Keller, Kasey
Ljungberg, Freddie
Marshall, Tyrone
Montero, Fredy
Zakuani, Steve

You protected Brad Evans over Sebastien Le Toux? Patrick Ianni?

Starting CM in Evans

Ianni was perceived to have more upside, more likely to start and was the heir apparent to Tyrone Marshall (who is the one I wouldn’t have protected).

There were enough indications that Le Toux was not adapting to MLS quality of play.

and seriously, 100K$ is a ton of money in MLS

It Doesn't Seem Like Much

to this San Jose fan, when San Jose pays

Ryan Johnson 125k
Scott Sealy 145k
Cornell Glen 99.9k
Ramiro Corrales 160k

no love for Crew's Robert Warzycha in the top 5

Columbus Crew are like the (NHL) New Jersey Devils of soccer. They are very annoying club to face every year.

Hans Backe at no. 1 is way too premature, esp. for a 1st year coach with the, Red Bull New York history has.

Warzycha No. 7

Maybe that’s a little low. State your case. You will be heard …

re: Backe

I picked up as my fantasy “coach” in fantasy MLS.

I would put Warzycha at #5 over Gary Smith of Col for sure though.

Colorado is like San Jose… we are overachievers who play “stoke city” ugly soccer. Rough ‘em up on defense, kick it far and run on offense with no midfield build up. It doesn’t take much coaching to do that.

The Dominic Kinnear comments...

They sting so bad…because they are so true.

Some people wanted Kinnear to replace BB as USMNT coach

As for me personally, I think he’s a great MLS coach but not ready for USMNT, therefore,

I’M NOT FA KINNEAR:

Well, Preki got fired.

Guess that cements his position pretty low.
