Things that sucked about my soccer weekend
TTS No. 1: That I was switching around Saturday and missed the moment BOTH coaches got thrown out of the DC United-Houston contest. That’s a moment I want to see! Getting screwed out of it is like being in the bathroom at the Lakewood Landing when some big-spender buys a round for the house. Darn the luck. (And it’s not on the MLS highlight package, which is weak.)
TTS No. 2: There was controversy aplenty in Salt Lake City, where referee Ramon Hernandez whistled a penalty kick. Then took it away. That sucks badly enough. But what super-sucks is that the MLS highlight package makers declined to include that one, too. (I saw that one, but maybe you didn't -- and maybe you'd like to.) That’s lame. And “lame” is worse than “weak.”
TTS No. 3: Dwayne De Rosario’s stunt at BMO. That was just sorry. (read on for more on that one ...)
Here’s a guy who makes north of $400,000. And he “writes a check” to celebrate a goal, to say “Show me the money!” That’s weak sauce, De Ro. He’s been heroically keeping TFC in the playoff chase all by himself. Last week I wrote something to the effect of “De Ro for Mayor! – How far can we be from that? But now when fans remember his 2010 season, they’ll remember “De Ro’s Drive for Dough!” A bunch of them are going to remember the moment a guy who makes $400K, probably 10 times the amount of most fans around BMO, showed the crowd what he’s made of. And it ain’t “frogs and snails and puppy dog tails.” It’s money. And the craving for more of it.
TTS No. 4: The SI.com Soccer Roundtable podcast that was set to drop tonight has been delayed. Maybe tomorrow night. Maybe Wednesday morning. And now I’ve got a butt-load of Funyuns sitting around in bowls for all the peeps coming by tonight to hear it with me!
By the way, a more comprehensive review of the MLS weekend is here at SI.com, where I wonder about the resolve of Toronto, Chicago and Kansas City after weekend choke jobs.

It's about getting the MVP
I don’t think he was writing a check. I think he was writing his name on the ballot of MVP.
Except then he pretty much came out and said that the whole thing was bout $
so that kills that theory.
I actually support his desire for a bigger deal
His contract is up at the end of the year and on a team where he is clearly the best player, he is clearly the leader of the team, and yet a d-mid who has been questionable since joining the team makes 4 times more than him.
I think it was the wrong thing to do, at the wrong time (when losing a match), but I can agree that much like Landon who got a major revamp during his recent contract talks, that DeRo is worth more than what he is getting paid. During the TFC match last night, the announcers made a point that will be tough for MLS to ignore. When salaries are public, players with results will compare themselves to the big names and say if he is getting more than I am but not producing the numbers I am, I want a raise. Welcome MLS to being a real sport.
There are players doing the same thing as him getting paid a lot less
The amount he makes is at the very top end of what people make in this league. I think he got a pretty sweet contract. Schelotto, Casey, Cunningham, Le Toux, Montero, Buddle, Wondolowski… all make less, in all cases significantly less. Every team has a player that contributes the way he does. That does not mean they are DP quality or that he should be a DP.
On a sidenote, you being the RSL guy on SBN, did you see this article:
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/soccer/james-on-soccer/dero-has-to-go/article1730821/
They are suggesting TFC try to unload DeRo to RSL for Canadian international Will Johnson. I though that was an interesting take/idea on the whole thing…

I hate DeRo
His stupid goal dance, his annoying voice, and now his check writing gesture. If he wanted more he should’ve negotiated more in his contract.

Kinnear-Olson Red Cards
Hilarious! And sad. Julius James committed a hard foul in extra time. While a Houston player was down, Olsen walked over to Dom Kinnear to apologize for the foul and wish everyone well (I know, I know—it doesn’t fit with the picture everyone has of Ben Olsen), the two coaches shook hands and at that point they were shown a red card. No clear public answer from the refs at this point except that apparently there was fear that the coaches were about to go at it so they were carded for leaving their respective boxes (that both coaches are restricted to on the sidelines).
Steve, about TTS No. 2...
I was pissed too that that replay was not in the full game highlight video, but they did seem to add it after the fact as it’s own “highlight”. Here is the link:

That said, I’m not so sure it was a handball as per the second replay at the 1:09 mark (it is hard to tell from the first replay). Either way, all the camera angles sucked so it is hard to say and the FSC guys seem to think it was a definite handball. But, they’ve been wrong before.
One thing is for sure, the whole thing sucked.
DeRo is right
that he deserves more money but that was the exact wrong way to go about demonstrating this… utterly classless
Win or lose, we will always be here for you.
