Re-rating Major League Soccer’s MVP chase

Your new leader in Major League Soccer's MVP chase ... according to my personal rankings, at least.

I wrote recently that the MVP chase in Major League Soccer is a slippery, elusive beast. Things tend to shift quickly in this thing, I wrote.

So, I’ll try not to bust my arm patting myself on the back for this one, but, uh … nailed it!

Two weeks ago, Dwayne De Rosario was an “also ran” at best in the MVP sweepstakes. Now I’d label him “front runner.” I write more about why in this week’s SI.com review of Week 28. In a nutshell, his hat trick-plus on Saturday at RFK was one of the best MLS performances I’ve seen in years, the kind that sticks in minds when balloters punch their MVP votes.

So, here is my updated top six, after 28 of 32 rounds. (It’s a Top Five, with my ongoing effort to recognize a positioned that always gets short-changed.)

1. Dwayne De Rosario – Marco Etchverry had some big days and nights in a D.C. United shirt back in the late 90s, when he was great and the league’s average player was far from it. Still, this might have been the best performance ever for an organization that’s had quite a few. And that’s staying a lot.

2. David Beckham – Los Angeles would probably be at or near the top without their star midfielder’s brilliant passing and those league co-leading 14 assists. But they wouldn’t be heading to historic heights and wouldn’t be the clear class of MLS without Becks.

Star-divide

3. Brad Davis – The Houston attacker’s familiar weekend in capsule: assist on yet another massive, game-winning goal that keeps Houston alive in the playoff chase. Yawn. See you next week. (He shares the league lead in assists along with Beckham.)

4. Brek Shea – FC Dallas’ exciting young winger has cooled off  substantially – and a conversation needs to ensue on how many games the young man was asked to play for club and country over two months. But that’s another matter. For now, we can just say this. He was the leader two weeks ago but needs a couple of zippy performances to get back in the fight.

5. Mauro Rosales – This is a tough one, because he might have been zeroing in on the top spot two weeks ago. But now he’s hurt and likely not back for another week, at least. So the case is harder to make for a man who isn’t

5.5 Kyle Beckerman – I never get anywhere with this argument, but I press valiantly forward. Holding midfielders deserve a closer look at league MVPs. Beckerman is the MLS best at his position this year, and his team is among the trio that has distinguished itself above the field this year.

How stupid

are NY and TFC for getting rid of De Ro. They would rather waste millions on players like Rafa Marquez, Julian De Guzman, and Mista.

Win or lose, we'll always be there for you.

Hey Steve

There are 34 rounds in the MLS season this year, are there not? :D

On a more serious note:

I would contend that Nick LaBrocca and Jack Jewsbury belong on the list ahead of Beckerman. There’s no doubt he’s been at the peak of his game this season and likely the most effective holding mid in the game this year (although I’m willing to bet Osvaldo Alonso would disagree with you) but LaBrocca and Jewsbury have been money all year, and the focal point of their respective teams.

Brad Davis

“Brad Davis raised his chances created total to 100, nearly 40 more than the next closest player (Beckham).”—Optastats

Davis is having a great campaign

And his set-piece has never been better. (It’s always been good, so that’s saying something). His trouble is the playoffs … they gotta get there, or his MVP case falls substantially.

Dynamo MVP

As a Dynamo fan, I agree with you Steve; Brad is certainly Dynamo MVP, but unless the team not only makes the playoffs, but make the finals, then a candidate that helps take their team there should win, IMHO.

De Ro is a beast!

De Ro had a fantastic game. Probably his best in MLS. I’m not quite sure it’s the best of anyone in a DC Uniform. I remember one playoff game between DCU and the Revolution where Jaime Moreno put on a show, and Taylor Twellman responded with one of his own. What a game. But this was awesome, a great tonic after last year’s suffering.

If DCU makes the playoffs and goes deep after being the worst last year who could dispute De Ro’s value? He has to be MVP, and Olsen coach of the year. (On Olsen: simply adding a good player or two is not enough. Just ask NYRB.)

How can you call someone who has been traded twice in one season

the most valuable player?

Who has he been most valuable to? And for how long?

Sorry Steve, doesn’t pass the smell test.

Here's how:

All three teams scored more goals per game with him.

His days in Toronto were numbered no matter how he played. If the Reds were run by competent management, he’d never have started the season with them.

In New York, Hans Backe was so married to adopting a flat 4-4-2 that he wanted DeRo out, no matter how productive he was. Plus, he needed to move serious salary to make room for his DP ‘keeper – and Henry wasn’t going anywhere.

DeRo’s trades had nothing to do with his production or his value to those teams. On United, though, he’s been MLS POTW 3 times, now leads the league goals table, and is leading a team surging toward a playoff berth. Looks plenty valuable to me.

All that said, I’d probably have Davis, Rosales and Shea all right with De Rosario at the top right now.

I suspect that ...

… a lot of people may share B-Lot tailgater’s opinion. If De Ro keeps it up, it will create a tremendous conversation between the two camps.
